my phone

i don't think
that i could ever live
without my phone.

you see,
i'm not just
a crazy teenager,
i'm not all about
social media
and avoiding all social contact.

i use my phone
for talking without talking,
for avoiding anxiety,
like a deer avoids a hunter.

i use my phone
for distracting me
from everything bad in the world,
like a rattle distracts an infant.

i use my phone
to go to sleep,
i listen to music,
like a religious person
goes to church.

i use my phone
to text my friends,
to keep in touch,
like high school lovers
who were forced apart
by college.

i don't use my phone
to avoid the people
i am with,
i use my phone
to avoid the problems
inside my head.
