We followed Rayne into the cabin a little too stunned to speak. She stopped in the door way taking in everything: the wooden bunk beds, the door to the bathroom, the threadbare chair and matching love seat, and finally the two single beds tucked into alcoves on either side of the room. Her gaze came to rest on one of these and she walked over and threw her stuff on it. Then she plopped down beside it and pulled out a book.
Flynn was the first to come to his senses. Shaking his head as if to clear it he looked at the remaining beds and then back at us.
"I guess we should figure out where we're sleeping. Any ideas?" He was greeted with silence.
After a moment Leif spoke up.
"Umm... we could draw straws or pull names out of a hat or something....?"
Flynn nodded to himself "That works. Anyone got a hat and some paper?"
Blaze unearthed a tattered ball cap from his bag and Uriah found some old receipts and a crayon under one of the beds.
We all wrote our names down and placed them in the hat. Blaze shook them up and we took turns drawing names.
In the end Leif and Uriah got the top bunks with Flynn and Blaze below them and I was left with the other alcove.
Once we had thrown our stuff on our beds Rayne resurfaced from the depths of her book.
"Finally. You guys are worse than a group of girls." She stood and glanced at us "Are you going to move or do you think s'mores will just magically appear in front of you?"
"S'mores?" I could almost hear my mouth watering.
"Yes s'mores you idiot. What else would they feed you at a bonfire?"
"We get to eat unhealthy food? No beets and goat cheese?" Leif was staring at her in awe. I could feel my face mirroring his.
Rayne looked back and forth between us.
"There is something seriously wrong with you two." She turned and was half way out the door when she realized we weren't behind her. "Hello?! Losers! You coming?"
Me and Leif basically sprinted out the door with the others following at a regular pace chuckling lightly.
Rayne stopped a few feet outside but I kept running trying to get to the food. Once I got to the first fork in the path I realized that I had no idea where I was going so I darted back and threw myself to my knees in front of Rayne, hugging her knees. I looked up at her and gave her my best innocent puppy face.
"Rayne?"
"Yes Cassel?" she asked holding back a smile.
"Take me to the food?"
"Hmmm..." she pretended to think "Nope."
"Rayne?"
"Yes?"
"Why don't you love me?"
"Come on Raynie humor the poor boy" Flynn said stepping forward to sling his arm around her shoulders.
"Romeo, if you touch me I swear to God I will rip your balls off." Uh-oh she used her scary voice.
Flynn stopped, his arm inches from her and stepped back bringing it to his side.
Rayne looked down at me "Okay, let's go get some food."
I jumped up and hugged her then started pulling her down the path, determined to find the food.
"Calm down or we'll miss the turn and get lost and everyone else will eat all of the food."
The thought of other people eating my food caused me to stop and wait for the others to catch up.
"This way" Rayne started down a path i hadn't seen.
*************************************************************************
Oh. My. God.
I was in heaven.
So much delicious food!
"Hey Cassel you might wanna slow down, you're going to make yourself sick." Uriah reached out to take my plate away.
I growled at him and tried to bite his hand. No one touches my food!
He put his hands up in a gesture of peace.
"Woah! Okay, sorry. I won't touch it."
Blaze walked over and saw Uriah's face.
"Tried to take his plate away?" Uriah nodded. "It's okay, it happened to all of us."
It was about an hour into the bonfire. It had started the usual way: Welcome to camp, blah, blah, blah, rules, blah, blah, activities, have fun, ect. And then they brought out the food and I stopped paying attention.
Now Flynn was on the other side of the fire trying to sweet talk some girls, Leif was sitting by himself tinkering with something, and Rayne...
My eyes scanned the trees just beyond the reach of the firelight. There. A flicker of movement.
Oh dear. she caught one.
I smiled to myself and shook my head slightly.
This had been a good day.
