Chapter 1

Ring! It was the bell that signalled the end of school. Pieces of homework were flung into the air and down like autumn leaves. Doors were slammed open and students were flooding out of the school, shrieks breaking the silence that was imminent before the end of school. Max stared at the door of his classroom. He was, once again, the last to leave the class. Max was dazed at the fast paced river and peeked over heads for his short sister, considering her to have one more year to grow. Max squeezed through the hysterical crowd, and upon seeing his sister, pulled himself towards her sister, Adelicia, and was soon out of the crowd. He heaved a sigh of relief. As usual, Adelicia was reading. Max tapped Adelicia gently on the shoulder, but was ignored asAlex came into her view. Adelicia cumbersomely stuffed her book into her overstuffed bag and quickly pulled her fringe aside. She looked forward, staring intently at his marine blue eyes, her arm pushing against his chest..

“How can someone be as perfect as him...!” she thought dreamily.

His blond hair swerved over his ears, caressing his cheeks as his light brown eyebrows hung above his charming bold eye. His nose was perfectly symmetrical and his pink lips twisted into an adorable smirk that would never fail to make her heart beat faster. The rays of the sun highlighted his dimples and his butt chin, his biceps were perfectly defined as the veins on his skin bulged from his dark tan skin. A magnetic aura radiated from him within. It was hard to find an imperfection in him. Adelicia turned away as Alex drew closer, his cologne strong and seductive, almost irresistible.

“How could I have not noticed him before...”

“Hey...” Alex whispered seductively..

His voice warm and husky, yet pleasant to the ear. Alex leaned forward, one hand on the wall. His warm breath fanned Adelicia’s face as his gaze locked itself into Adelicia’s deep brown eyes.

Then, the phone vibrated in Max’s pocket. He hurriedly moved to a quiet corner and snapped open his ringing phone. Max’s eye widened as solemn words entered his ears. Quickly, he closed his phone and dashed to Adelicia.

“Sorry!” Max shouted, a frantic expression plastered to his face. Adelicia’s gaze tore from his as she stumbled, but regained balance quickly and soon found herself running hand in hand with Max, her younger brother.

“Bye!” she heard Alex mutter, but had not chance to return her farewell.

“Trouble! I received a call saying Mum is having difficulties breathing. This might be the last time you see Mum.” Max said, pulling his baseball cap down and over his forehead.

Max’s emphasis on “last” casted a shadow over Adelicia’s courage, confusion and anxiety getting to her. It was then Adelicia could see why Max kept his face low, hidden away from view. Max’s eye swelled up in sorrow as he attempted to hold back his tears. This was the first time Adelicia saw him cry. His ego just wouldn't let him, and she knew to her core that whatever was happening, it was unexpected. Mum was sick, but they did not expect such a fast deterioration in her health. In other words, dying and nothing could change that. Adelicia felt tears brimming in her eyes as she sped up, fear slowly engulfing her thoughts.
