Lana's gaze lowered. She had no idea what could be done, either. Their powers didn't work here and they were greatly outnumbered. It seemed idiotic to have hope in such circumstances.

She envisioned the reserve and her family. She pictured Demetri's members jumping the wall and breaking into their houses, dread seeping into her stomach. A sudden thought crossed her mind and she gasped, causing Micah to tense.

"What's wrong?" he questioned, his eyes locked onto hers.

"What will they do with my parents and your dad? They're human," she stated breathlessly.

Micah's eyes widened slightly with realization. "I-I have no clue," he muttered just as the door squeaked open, drawing their attention. A guy their age walked in. He had auburn hair and eyes the color of Lana's. The unexpected hue of his irises caused her eyebrows to raise in surprise.  He drew closer, his posture regal.

"I'm Porter. Demetri mentioned me earlier, I do believe," he stated, the hint of a British accent tainting his voice.

Lana stared at him, still stuck on his eyes. Her only surviving victims were Asher and her brother, which meant one of them either bit him or someone else that did. She glanced at Micah, who had his eyes on Porter. His expression was neutral.

Porter met Lana's gaze and flashed her a white smile. "Happy to see someone else with the rare vampire trait? Demetri considers those with gray eyes more powerful and more deserving of a higher rank in the Hirudo society," he explained.

"Why is that?" she managed, confusion lacing her words.

"He knows you're the first vampire to come into existence. He says your blood makes you one of the purest among us, being that you're the only one that received the original cure. Anyone bitten by you - or one of the others graced by your bite - are the most elite in our society. He calls us "Altumbloods", which translates to "highbloods". He says you're a very important asset," Porter elucidated, crossing his arms behind his back.

"He thinks I'm an important asset?" Lana scoffed. "He doesn't act like it."

"He knows your significance, but that doesn't mean he's above killing you. Especially when you threaten his position. He'll take that course of action if you become more of a risk than an aid."

Lana knew he'd heard their previous exchange. There was no need to question it. She gripped the bridge of her nose between her thumb and index finger, squeezing slightly. Her head was beginning to pound with all this new information.

"If he thinks so highly of the Altumbloods, then why bother being the leader? Why isn't an Altumblood the head of this sociey?" Micah asked, voicing his own questions.

Porter trained his eyes onto Micah. "He craves power, despite his beliefs. An Altumblood is second-in-command, however," Porter replied, straightening his shoulders ever so slightly.

"It's you, I'm assuming?" Lana voiced.

    Porter nodded. "It is."

Lana tried to process everything she just heard. Demetri knew way more than she formerly believed. He even knew she was the very first vampire. A chill clawed up her spine and tingled across her skin. She didn't want to know how he obtained this knowledge. Her eyes searched Porter's face, but his eyes gave away nothing. She observed his posture, the way he stood there with an air similar to that of royalty. It seemed to be instinct, and she found herself curious about his past.

Porter broke the few moments of silence. "There's a second power within you," he stated bluntly, glancing at Lana. "Not surprising, but something tells me you didn't know."
