chapter 1: 2024 general pov

"Honey! I'm home!" She called
He had been with the kids all afternoon. She had dropped them off at school that morning. He woke up around noon. He worked the third shift at the meat plant and didn't usually get out until 6 or 7 in the morning. By the time he got home around 8 or 9 she had already taken the kids to school and had been at work for a half hour to an hour.
"Hey! How was work?" He asked politely.
" It was meeting after meeting today. I had to bring some of the newly signed contracts home and assign them to reps." She replied exhaustedly
" Oh that's going to take all night?" He asked curiously.
"Most of the night."she replied.
"Well I've got the night off. They called and said that they don't need me tonight." He said happily.
She ran and hugged him because she knows that he'll be there when she goes to sleep tonight. He only gets one night off a month unless he asks for more. What she didn't know is that on his days off from the meat plant he goes and takes classes to become a mechanic at the local college online.
"Oh honey I have a surprise to tell you." He said proudly.
" Oh? What is it?" She replied quizzically
"I'm going to school to be a mechanic. I want to earn more money. Hopefully become ASE Certified!" He said enthusiastically
" That's great honey, but we don't have to worry about money." She said
" I'm doing this for my own self-respect dear. I know I don't need to be making more money, but my parents struggled to put me through school and I want to put the kids through school myself." He replied strongly
"Okay." She replied happily
He took out his laptop as well as his book and began to do his work on the couch. He usually got a few chapters done during the day, but more on his days off. She put the kids to bed and curled up with him on the couch. She grabbed her work and looked at her list of representatives and their qualifications. She had to assign 12 contracts to 12 reps. He saw that she passed out around 11; so he put her o bed and tucked her in. He got to read 6 chapters that night.
When she got up the next morning she saw that he had made her coffee and breakfast. She wrote him a note like she did every morning. Although in this note she thanked him specifically about making coffee and breakfast for her. She woke her children up and told them to hurry because she woke up late. She didn't remember going into bed the night before; she guessed that he had put her to bed.
