What is a want which is not fulfilled?

Alex was arriving in an hour and Matt was excited. His 5 year-old self was showing much more than usual and Karen noticed.

Karen always noticed. Why did Matt always get excited about her, what was so special about Alex Kingston? She was beautiful, yes, but Matt always got excited to see her, too excited. Karen sighed as she watched him prance around set, he knew how she felt about him but they were always shrugged off. He never believed her.

"I love you Matt" Karen whispered one night when they were alone together.

"No you don't, Karen. You're drunk" Matt replied with a giggle.

Karen wasn't drunk, she'd been having non-alcoholic beverages all night. She was totally sober. She really did love him.

Matt swaggered over to Karen, who was still reminiscing the past. "Why so grumpy, Kazza?" he said through a large grin. 

Karen shrugged, she couldn't exactly tell him why. It was all Alex-bloody-Kingston's fault she was grumpy, but Alex was always 'perfect' and 'irresistable'. Everyone found her attractive, including Matt. He should like me, thought Karen to herself.

"Knock Knock" Matt's wonderful voice pulled her out of her thoughts. 

"Huh?" she mumbled

"I just asked you if you had finished filming for the day, stupid." he said with a poke to her shoulder. Although it kind of hurt she enjoyed the brief contact.

"Oh, um, yeah, yeah I have" she managed to stumble out.

"Want to join me and Darvill for a pint or two in the pub to welcome Alex back into Cardiff?"

Karen thought a moment about it, but no, she didn't want to get in the way of him and his precious Alex. "No, I'm too tired. Sorry MAtt" she said whilst forcing a yawn.

"Oh okay, that's a shame, All four of us at the pub togther would have been nice."

"Yeah, sorry." Karen said as she walked off. Leaving Matt at the table wondering why his best friend had just turned down a visit to the pub.
