Gold is no longer gold. It is more of an asset than an accessory.
My parents asked me to pick a design at the store. I looked through the glass cases and nothing caught my eye. I wanted something in silver. If they were going to spend so much money - they could get me a car instead... or maybe a MacBook. Yes that would be very cool. It would also help me be a work-from-home wife.
Mom: Look at this one - the pendant has beautiful stones
Dad: Let her decide what she wants...
I shook my head and looked away.
Me: Do you have anything less...well you know...grand?
I used to wonder why so much gold was provided to a girl when she got married - so much that sometimes people go into debt just to get it for her. I remember one of my friends explaining to me that gold was not an accessory (it was a beautiful form of security). The girl uses it to adorn herself during good times, and can sell it or provide it as security if she ever faces a financially bad time.
Mom: Thank you for the help.
Dad: I guess she doesn't like anything. Could you call me if you get some new designs?
Disappointed Salesman: Sure
I walked out of the store with my head down. What a boring afternoon. I stood outside waiting for my parents and looked at my bracelet with a smile.
A simple piece of jewelry - black beads and chunky metallic hearts. My fiance had bought it for me when he visited a month ago. I remember finding it on my desk with a note that said:
"For the girl who has my heart. Keep it safe"
This is the kind of jewelry that makes a girl smile. And it is the thought behind it that provides her with a feeling of security....knowing she has someone who will take care of her and keep her happy. This is what I call GOLD.
