Lily squealed as she looked out the windows in the common room and saw snow. Running to the window she put her hands on the glass and watched the flakes slowly floating down from the sky. This. This was her favorite time of year. With a burst of excitement she spun around to grab her coat, and spun right into the arms of an unsuspecting James Potter.
"Oof" he exclaimed as she knocked him off balance. Grabbing her arms for balance, he exclaimed, "Golly Evans, you don't need to attack me to get my attention, you should know this by now."
Lily couldn't wipe the smile off her face, and began to bounce up and down, "It's snowing James! Have you seen it! It's snowing and I absolutely have to go outside! Come on!" And without a second thought, she grabbed James by the hand and flew out of the common room, dragging him down the hallway. Halfway to the entrance, she realized she was holding his hand, and stopped in her tracks, looking over at him with a blush, as she dropped his hand. "Um..... sorry about that. You actually don't have to come if you'd rather not." She giggled nervously and started slowly walking away.
"Not so fast Evans." James grabbed her hand again, and began pulling her towards the entrance. "You promised me further invitations this year, and I'm not letting you get out of them so fast." He winked and began towing her outside. Once past the doors, he continued to drag her away from the courtyard.
"James, we don't have to go so far outside, I only wanted to see the snow!" Lily protested as he continued well past the courtyard and in the direction of the lake. James slowed down, but still continued on course. Lily blushed as she realized they were still holding hands, but didn't make a move to pull away.
*************
James didn't know where his mind had gone, but he was too far in to turn back now. Either this was going to be the best moment of his life, or another tick mark on his count of horrible disappointments. "Oh Evans, don't you know when the snow is coming down like this, the only worthy view is down by the lake?" He winked and smiled when she blushed rather than protesting. His smile grew when he realized that they were still holding hands, and she hadn't made a move to change that. Maybe this was going to be his lucky day.
**************
Lily's mind was spinning by the time they reached the lake. Was this it? Was she going to finally tell James how she felt? Was he going to tell her that he was over it? That he just wanted to be friends? Was this going to end horribly? Was it worth it? The questions all faded away when James pulled her over to a log and sat her down, before sitting right next to her, hands still entwined. He looked at her with sparkingling eyes and said, "So, was I right?"
Lily looked out over the lake, and a slow smile came to her face as the increasingly heavier snowfall fell around them and onto the glistening lake. "It's so beautiful" she whispered. Her smile grew even more at the view and then froze when she realized that James was rubbing the back of her hand with his thumb. Nervously, she turned to look at him.
**************
Throwing caution to the wind, James decided to take advantage of Lily's distraction and start rubbing her hand with his thumb. He felt her freeze, and then look over at him. Nervously, he looked into her face, expecting derision, and being completely surprised at the slight smile and deep blush he found instead. Further encouraged he pulled on her hand, inching closer to her. "You're right Evans. It is quite beautiful." Lily's blushed deepened and cleared her throat as she turned back to looking at the lake, yet still made no move to remove her hand.
With caution already off in the wind somewhere, James blurted out, "Do I have a chance Lily? An honest chance?" Lily looked at him with surprise, her mouth slowly dropping open and James plowed forward. "I know I've been a complete idiot the entirety of the time you've known me, and I know that you're probably absolutely sick to death of me, but I feel like maybe now we're friends, and I feel like maybe you like me a little more. Not like, that you like like me, but that you're not wanting to curse me all the time, and you don't have to like me more than a friend at all right now, I just need to know if there's any way, any way at all, that I have a chance with you. As, you know, more than a-a friend." He ended with a cough and dropped his gaze, not quite able to look her in the eyes.
**************
Lily was frozen as James opened his mouth and began to speak. When he finished he dropped his eyes and wouldn't look at her. It was in this moment, that Lily made up her mind, for better, or for worse. "James." She said softly. He slowly looked up and before she could change her mind, Lily launched towards him and kissed him right on the mouth.Pulling back quickly, she put her hands to her face and exhaled shakily as James looked at her in complete shock and silence. "Oh dear. I'm so sorry," she nervously giggled, "I really shouldn't have done that. Did I hurt you? Oh no.... I'm so sorry James, I really didn't mean to-"
Before she could continue James grabbed her face and pulled her back towards him, kissing her much more gently on the mouth. Pulling back slightly, he looked down at her closed eyes and surprised mouth and absolutely could not resist kissing her again. Their lips met, and this time, they were both ready. James moved his hands down from Lily's face to the back of her head, and then moved one to her waist, pulling her closer to him. Lily grabbed his shoulders and shivered as their kiss went on, and on.
**************************
James couldn't help but deepen their kiss when Lily grabbed his shoulders. He'd been waiting and waiting for this moment. Over six years he had waited to kiss Lily Evans, and he was going to pour every moment of wanting into this moment. After what seemed like an eternity of bliss, they broke apart, breathing heavily. James placed his forehead on Lily's and closed his eyes. "Please tell me this is real, Lily. Please tell me I didn't get a fever from being outside so long and imagine all of this." He heard Lily inhale sharply and pulled back to look at her.
Lily looked into James' eyes for a moment, and then allowed a smile to spread across her face. "James Potter, I can't answer that question. Because there is no way on this green earth, that a kiss like that was real."
James mouth dropped, but before he could reply, Lily launched at him again, knocking them both off of the log, and kissing him until neither of them could breathe.
