Smoke clouds billowed at the edges of Lindsey's lips. She held a lit cigarette in her left hand, glowing in the foggy gray day.

No matter how pretty it looked, it smelled like shit and I hated this habit that she had picked up in the last year. Following her out to the hang-in during lunch was never fun.

"I'm gonna smell like smoke." I said, looking around at the other kids, huddled in groups. It was crazy that no one ever found out about the twenty or so people that would come here every day at lunch to partake in clouding up the sky with nicotine.

Lindsey's green eyes shifted towards me, she took another drag off of her cigarette, letting smoke and silence settle in the cracks. "You never have to come. I'm fine on my own."

"I can't leave you alone, especially with last month." I was referring to a certain day where I had stayed home because of period cramps and my pink haired friend with a smoking habit ended up giving our schools track star, Ed Evans, a broken nose.

"He deserved it." Lindsey mumbled, taking another drag of her cigarette.

"I never said he didn't." A breeze ruffled my hair, hitting my face with smoke from other peoples cigarettes, making me cough. I caught Lindsey's eyes trailing off and I tried to lighten the conversation. "But if I was there I could've held him down while you broke his fingers."

A small smile sprouted on Lindsey's face which desolved into a frown. "Damn, he's such a fucking jerk." She spat, throwing her cigarette to the ground and stomping it out. She did it to look cool. A couple seconds later she leaned down to pick up the stub and put it safely in her pocket.

"Hey," I set a hand on her shoulder. "Are you good?"

I Lindsey looked over and shook her head a bit. "That whole situation just-" she pulls her hand in a loose motion "can we forget it?"

I was a little taken back. I didn't know exactly what that kid said to her, but it must still be swirling in her mind like the smoke in her lungs. Yeah." I said, "Of course."

Lindsey smiled. She took a breath and then adjusted her skirt. "Lets go back inside."

"Hell yeah, it's cold."
