Taking your job seriously, you had always gone in with a professional front; when it came to rushing out and into the sea to save a life, all personal things would be pushed aside. Yet it's easier said than done when it came to none other than Jesse Polock.
You got on with the rest of the boys like a house on fire. You were best mates with Jethro and were cousin of the trainee Tommy. The guys saw you as just another one of the boys.
But with Jesse, you two just didn't get along. Hoppo was aware, as were the other guys due to the bickering you to had - they all found amusement out of it; and so far, you hadn't been put in the situation where you would have to perform a rescue or handle a situation along side him.
Hoppo didn't pair you up, and didn't plan on unless it was necessary - and you both understood and reassured him that you should be able to put issues aside in case of an emergency, not matter how difficult it may be.
Jumping up the stairs to the lifeguard tower, the sun still hidden away at 5am in the morning - you tied your hair up into a ponytail as you walked inside, a small smile on your face.
"Morning!" You chirped, your smile dropping when you realised you were the second person to arrive this morning, and the one who had opened up was none other than Jesse. "Oh." You muttered.
"Nice to see you too." Jesse scoffed under his breath, you not having to spare him a glance to know he had rolled his eyes. You just hoped someone else would arrive before Hoppo did so you wouldn't be sent with Jesse to set up the beach for the busy day ahead.
"You really expect me to be delighted to see you?" You asked, sarcasm laced in your voice as you walked over to the little locker cubes where your uniform was stored, stripping off your shorts and shirt so you were in your swimming one piece - placing the blue lifeguard shirt and shorts over top.
"Expected a better-" Jesse started to snap back, before none other than your boss walked through the doors. Although he understood you both didn't get along and did laugh at the bickering, both you and Jesse knew it'd be better to not argue in front of him, especially at work.
"Where's the rest of the guys?" Hoppo laughed, walking in as he set some of his stuff down on the bench, glancing at the two young adults, only receiving shrugs in return. "Well, which one of ya is gonna go set up the beach?" Hoppo laughed, sensing the tension in the room.
"I'll go set up the south side." Jesse huffed, raising to his feet as he grabbed his radio and some other necessary equipment before he headed down the steps and to one of the buggy's.
While he was gone, Hoppo was simply filling you in with a few funny stories that had happened the previous day, as you had a shift off yesterday. "And then-" Hoppo continued to explain before a voice came through the radio.
"Jesse to tower, can I get someone on the binoculars, I'm at the south end and there seems to be some sort of floating object... looks like a capsized boat dangerously close to the rocks... can you see any people there?" Jesses voice came through, you and Hoppo both switching into work mode as you both grabbed a pair of binoculars.
Looking out through the window across the beach, it was clear there was a capsized boat and two people both struggling to get ahold of it while trying to stay above water. "Hoppo here - uh, Yep mate there seems to be two people... they're definitely in some trouble." Hoppo started. The beach hadn't even be opened and you already had a feeling this wasn't going to be easy.
