Being assigned to stay up in the tower was easily the worst role you could have being a lifeguard, especially since you would be stuck there all day and miss out on the action.
Breaking your arm hurt a lot, but it wasn't as bad as the effect it had on your job. Although the cast was now gone - you had yet to be given the all clear by the doctors to return to your usual lifeguard duties; so here you were, from dusk till dawn sitting up at the tower while watching your workmates and closest friends save lives while you feel helpless.
On the positive side - your best friend, Jesse, was injured too and was facing the same problem as well. He shared the same opinion on being locked away in the tower all day instead of being down on the beach. If you didn't have him to relate to for this past month and next couple weeks, you would've cracked.
"Tower to rhino, we got a guy drifting out the back of a rip - he's not looking too bad but he doesn't seem to know what he's doing." You spoke into the radio while looking into the binoculars down at the north end of the beach.
"Rhino to tower, Yeah I've spotted him - I'll just try reach him through the megaphone for a bit." Harrison's voice came through, your eyes still looking over at the guy who was getting worse by the second. "Yeah I'm gonna have to go out." Harrison soon spoke, you nodding even though he couldn't see you.
"Yeah he's going down quick." You replied, sitting up straight in the chair slightly. Glancing at Jesse to see what he was doing, noticing he was dealing with a problem down the south end. Drawing your attention back to Harrison, you placed your binoculars down and leant back slightly when he got the patient on the board.
Hearing a knock at the door of the tower, you saw Jesse glance to you - knowing he was in the middle of dealing with a rescue, you stood up and quickly walked over to the door. It had been a busy day and it wasn't even 1pm. Bluebottles had swarmed the beach, conditions were horrible and rips seemed to be appearing everywhere.
Opening the door quickly, you were faced with a little boy - seeming no older than 5 and had tears running down his cheeks, holding the hand of a blonde teenage girl, that looked no older than 16. "Hi, I found this little guy wondering around in front of the flags... I tried finding him parents but he wasn't really talking to me." The girl said, a worried look planted on her face.
Grabbing the hand of the little boys gently, you sent the girl a quick smile. "Okay thank you, so you found him in front of the flags walking around?" You quickly confirmed, knowing you'd have to get back to the binoculars as Jesse seemed to still be dealing with the same rescue, meaning there weren't any eyes watching the rest of the beach.
"Yeah, he seemed lost and stuff." The girl replied, running a hand through her hair - slowly walking towards the stairs to return to the beach. The little boy was holding your hand and was still crying, obviously stressed and scared.
"Okay thank you!" You called out, closing the door before picking the boy up and heading back up to your seat. "You wanna tell me your name buddy?" You asked calmly, sitting down and placing him the seat next to you - grabbing your binoculars in one hand.
"T-tommy." He cried, wiping his eyes with his hand as he looked at you. You nodded and quickly tried to calm the boy, glancing to the ocean every few seconds. Usually, whenever the lifeguards were faced with an upset or stressed kid, the boys would leave it to you, as apparently you could deal and calm them the best.
