I awoke to the alarm clock blaring beside my head. Grumbling, I smacked my hand down repeatedly, searching for the snooze button. From downstairs I heard my dad cooking breakfast, like every morning. I rolled onto my back, rubbing my eyes and yawning. The sound of heels on hardwood encouraged me to sit up as my mother knocked lightly on my door before letting herself in.
"Sweetie, you getting ready? School starts in an hour and a half and you need to eat some breakfast."
Her stature was small, but she was a powerhouse. She was the leading publisher in all of Alabama. I aspired to be as accomplished as her when I was older. It was my first year of college, the first day actually, and I was slightly terrified. My best friend Elle and her twin brother Augustus weren't attending the same school as me, and they were my only real friends. I would be sufficiently alone, and that scared me.
I stood up, my feet finding the fluffy interior of my slippers and I slipped a robe over my pajamas. Shuffling down the stairs, I was greeted by my dad, flipping pancakes on a large skillet. The room smelled heavenly, and helped to ease the butterflies flapping hard in my tummy.
"Ready for today Ti? Have all of your books packed?"
My dad meant well, but he tended to be a little overbearing. Standing well over my mother at 6'3, he could be a little intimidating. He was the president of the biggest bank chain in Alabama, also amounting to a high rank in society.
I nodded, forcing a smile to appear on my lips. He placed pancakes and syrup in front of me, along with butter, french toast, scrambled eggs and bacon. It was safe to say I'd never go hungry here.
I began to stuff my face, avoiding eye contact with either of my parents and making sure my mouth was always full. As I finished, Luce, our maid, came around and collected my plates and taking them back to the kitchen to clean them. I stood up, heading back upstairs to get ready. I pulled on my burgundy skirt, cream jumper, and black kitten heels. I organized all of my books in my bag, pulling it up on my shoulder. Looking at my watch, I saw that I had 30 minutes before school started. I scanned over my agenda, seeing how I was relatively free today. Tea at 2:00pm with my mum and the women's club like every day, but other than that I would be free. Both of my parents were going out of town tomorrow, so they would be busy packing tonight. I texted Derien, our driver, that I was ready.
"To: Der-Bear
Hey, ready to go? School in 30."
"To:Miss Tivana
Of course, come out front, I'll pull around"
I climbed back down the stairs and blew kisses to my parents before heading into the warm Alabama sun. Derien was waiting in our white Cadillac, and I climbed in the passenger side. He gave me a smile and patted my back.
"You'll do fine Miss."
I smiled, giving him a small hug before he pulled out of our driveway and onto the main drag, my school slowly appearing in the distance. I turned to Derien, kissing his cheek.
"I have to be back home by 2, so please don't forget to come get me alright? I know you won't, you're the best, but just a reminder. "
I rushed, feeling my cheeks turn pink at my loss of breath. I had a bad feeling about school today, I just couldn't put my finger on it.
