||Loving Him||

Chapter Two

6 months later.

October 2008

After the funeral, the routine at school was awkward at first. People kept stumbling with words whenever they were with us, close friends of Jane. Especially with Adam. They were extra careful with him.

He had just returned to school four months ago after taking two months leave. It was a special case because Adam had spectacular grades. He had also promised that he would try to study at home. The only reason he did not want to go to school was because he has never spent a moment at school without Jane.

They shared the same classes, were seat partners, partners in doing projects and basically everything they did was together. To say they were joined at the hip would be a huge understatement. Hence, why the school accepted his leave.

The hallways were rather dull with the abscence of Jane. Everything was different without her. How cheering at soccer matches always felt like such a chore instead of actually being there to support the school. Even Adam had left the boys' team and instead, joined the art club. Well, at least we were still friends and that meant he had not closed up entirely.

Even though there were visible changes in his behaviour like instead of going to the cafeteria for lunch, he would spend his lunch outside with Jane's iPod. He also did not hang out with us as much.

Halloween was just around the corner and I can't help but reminisce about last year's celebration. We got permission from the principal to turn the whole school into a giant horror house. We got people from the drama club to be the ghosts and everyone in the school helped prepare. It was all Adam's idea. We even got the newspaper club to collaborate with the local newspaper to promote the event.

The girls (Jane, Lynn, Sam, though reluctantly and I) dressed up as the Queen of Hearts from Alice In Wonderland. It had a black corset with a poofy skirt which was a combination of white, red and black. Our make-up was extremely gothic with really thick black eyeliner and black lipstick. Thank god that our hair, excluding Jane, wasn't black. Lynn and I are blondes while Sam is a brunette. It would have made us looked like emos.

The boys, for some idiotic reason or perhaps some kind of 'calling' as they referred to it, dressed in superhero costumes. Danny in a spiderman suit, Ken in a batman suit and Adam in a superman costume. They made it seem like it was a comic expo or something. It was HALLOWEEN! Though may I add the fact that they looked extremely dashing.

Pfft. Who uses the word 'dashing'? Me, obviously. But seriously, Who uses it?

Oh, back to our topic: Halloween last year.

To sum it all up, it was a success, we made money, threw a house party with that money, got busted, I got grounded for a month. Yet that didn't stop me from sneaking out of the house to hang out with them.

To be perfectly honest, I can't even describe how fun it was to hang out with the group. Though we were kind of the 'IT' group in school, we weren't the stereotype popular kids. We were the whimsical, eccentric and odd group who just had good networking and almost everyone liked us. We didn't bully nor did we force anyone to do our homework. In fact, Adam and Jane were tutors. They did it for free because obviously, they didn't need the money.

While I didn't need any tutoring from anyone, I sure wasn't the top student in school. No, that was a spot that Adam and Jane competed for every time there were exams.

Though I say compete, it was a totally relaxed one. They held study groups every day after school for us. Taught what the rest of us didn't understand. I guess that was their unique way of studying: Teaching.

Dad had noticed my recent grades and he wasn't really happy with them. He noticed that my grades had dropped since, you know, the funeral. To me, studying wasn't really that fun anymore without Jane and we haven't had any study groups for the exams in these past six months. Dad had scolded me saying "If you expect to inherit my galleries, then you better get a move on!".

Dad was the owner of several art galleries in North America and he had a few in Europe as well. Ever since I was a child, I had been groomed to take over it in the future. I wasn't the only one who was groomed for success.

Jane had been groomed to be a politician but she didn't want that. She was more of an artsy type. She loved to paint and write poetry, she even had written songs. She was a very talented person. Adam was supposed to take over his dad's law firm and before all this happened, he was already committed to the idea of being a lawyer.

Sam's going to be an architect and take over her dad's company as well. Danny, I guess he's still not sure but there's plenty of time for him to decide. We're still in our first year of high school! Kendall wants to be a photographer, I think. Or was that one time when we discussed about who could take the best pictures just a joke? Well, Ken's is still vague as well as Danny, huh...

We all had our career plans laid out for us. Yet, in the end, it is still our choice. Still, when I think about the future, I just can't get over how much we will be missing out on Jane's opinions, laughter, smiles, advice and wit.

This year, for halloween, we’d just go trick-or-treat-ing. We’re never too old to do that. Maybe we are but who cares? Let me rephrase that: we don’t care about what other people think about us.

"Eve! Hey wait up!" someone shouted as I was walking to the cafeteria.

It was lunch period and I desperately needed food in my stomach.

I turned around to see that Adam had called me.

"Yeah?" I replied curiously.

"Can I... like sit with you guys today?" his posture was slightly rigid and I wondered of he was afraid I wouldn’t let him sit with us or maybe the fact that he would be sitting at our usual table without Jane for the first time ever.

"Sure. You didn’t need to ask. There’ll always be a spot for you." I smiled at him and he nodded.

"Now let’s go or I’m afraid my stomach will eat itself." I joked.

He just chuckled and together, we walked to the cafeteria.
