Fae had gone limp when her father left and explained to a very worried Simon that it was because she hadn't eaten since Saturday. Today was Wednesday. Simon had looked at her with what he thought was a pained expression but she mistook for pity, and that had not gone over well.
Florence didn't like to be pitied or treated like anything less than the woman she was. And she was a woman. When they had arrived at Stardust, the closest diner on Broadway, Fae had gone into a bit more detail about herself. She was nineteen, an only child, adopted and was now working at the Strand full time until she could save up enough money for a down payment on the apartment of her dreams. Turned out she lived in Brooklyn too and had her eye on a studio in The Garden. Fae wasn't going to go to college "I have more important things to do" she said as she sipped at her green tea "I want to see the world." Simon thought she would love to be a shadowhunter, and that it was too bad she was a fairie. "Pardon?" Florence blinked. She was a perfect fairie, Simon thought, the Fair Folk were soft spoken but stubborn and head strong. They didn't take no for an answer or ask for help, they were always wise, always steady. Simon looked up at Flo as she repeated herself and this time he blinked. "I'm sorry did you say something?" he didn't think she had but then again he hadn't been listening. "No" she shook her head "you did." Her curls flounced up and down and he noticed that the tips of her hair were silver. Simon felt his brow crease in confusion and Fae must've noticed because she said "You said that I would love being a shadowhunter but it's too bad that I'm a fairie." Simon felt the tension leave his face as hers dawned with curiosity. "I" he started but hesitated and flicked his tongue over his now dry lips "I said that out loud?" Far laughed and it was a magical sound, tinkling through the air like music, light and lovely. "Unless I can read minds" her forehead creased in consideration as if it were a possibility "then, yes you spoke aloud." She even talked like them, all elegant and calm. Whoops Simon thought. "Fae" the breath rattled in Simon's chest and he almost didn't say it. Almost. "There's something I have to tell you."
