Keep your head down. Don't attract attention. This was rule number one for surviving high school. Or at least for 15 year old Castiel Novak it was. He'd learnt this the hard way. That was the only thing going through his mind as he navigated the school halls on that Monday afternoon. There were thousands of kids surrounding him, all desperate to get home. They pushed and shoved at each other in an attempt to squeeze through the main doors.

It was uncomfortable and crowded but it was exactly where Cas needed to be. Amongst the sea of classmates he could disappear, he was invisible.

But the second he stepped out of those doors, the kids filtered off and separated into groups leaving Cas all alone.

He quickly began his walk across the parking lot to the main road. It was already virtually empty which made him on edge.

Cas was only a meter or so away from the gate when he saw the set of familiar teenagers and heard their all too familiar shrieks.
He desperately tried to push his head even further into his trench coat and held his books close to his face, to hide his identity.

"Hey Castiel, we're do you think you're going!"

He froze his books slipping slightly in his sweaty palms.

"C'mon what're you hiding for?" Richard Roman called appearing behind Cas and tugging at his coat to turn him around. Now that Cas was facing him he could see that he was accompanied by the usual posse. Lilith, Azazel, Ruby and Alistair.

Cas kept his eyes glued to the concrete. He'd tried to fight them the first few times, it failed miserably. So now he just accepted it.
"What have you got here?" He asked pointing at Cas' books and files.

"Work." Cas replies knowing whatever he said would be the wrong answer.

"Nerd." Dick sighed smacking the books from Cas' hands, sending papers flying everywhere.
Cas looked around for a teacher or someone who could help but only saw a single boy from his year wandering passed absentmindedly. Not expecting any help Cas bent down to pick up his books but was quickly shoved to the floor.

"You're such a little freak Cassie!" Dick laughed, stepping on the sleeve of Cas' coat so he couldn't get up. The others laughed with him.

Typical Monday afternoon, being humiliated by Dick Roman whilst his friends laughed.
It wasn't that they were the popular kids. No one wanted to be their friend. But everyone was scared of them, even the teachers. It wasn't just Cas they bullied. They'd messed with every person in 9th grade at some point. But Cas was a constant victim. Mostly because he was awkward and shy, and partly because when they were in middle school Cas and Dick had been friends.

"Dude what the hell!" Someone yelled suddenly.

Cas craned his neck and saw the boy in his year with sandy blonde hair walking towards them. Cas was surprised to find he didn't actually know the boys name. Cas was a pretty observant person and he thought he knew the names of everyone he had classes with. But all he knew about this kid was that they had English class together.

Dick turned around, his foot slipping allowing Cas to free his arm and stand up again.

"I'm sorry did you want something?" Dick asked coolly.

"Yeah, why don't you leave him alone." The boy  said.

"Ooh what're you going to do about it?" Azazel hissed.

In response this boy strolled over to him calmly. Although Azazel, Alistair and Dick were about the same height as the other boy he seemed to tower over them both. He clenched his fists and smirked slightly. "Do you really want to find out?" He sneered and Cas actually saw Alistair flinch.
