||Chapter Six||
After a few minutes of staring at the ground, I followed Daryl's tracks. Would he tell or do what he said? He was right. It wasn't his problem and I should be the one to tell them, but once they can trust me more. If I tell them now, I'll be thrown out for sure. This is prison is too valuable to loose.
I opened the door into the tall building a quietly as I could. I didn't want to disturb anyone's sleep so they could start asking me questions. I tiptoed back to my cell, but when I got to the stairs, silence was out of the question. The squeaky metal would make a sound by even the lightest touch.
By now, I didn't really care if I should be quiet, but I still took careful steps towards the second floor. I made it to the last step before my boots touched concrete. I could barely see and the moon gave little light to show me the way. I used the railing as a guide to my cell. I didn't want to use my flashlight power just to take a few steps.
A small, bright beam of white started waving around on the ground ahead of me. The source then slowly came from behind a walk to reveal a small figure holding it. The light traveled to my face making my hand go up to sheild my eyes. "Avery?" It was Carl. "Hey, I'm just coming back from watch. Go back to bed," I whispered starting to take a few steps closer to him.
I couldn't see his face so deciphering his expression was impossible. "Daryl came back an hour ago to wake Glenn and Maggie for watch. Why are you just coming now?" Impossible. Carl's watch had to be wrong or he miscalculated the time that passed. I thought it was only a few minutes I've been standing out there, but it looks like Carl proved me wrong.
"An hour?" I sighed. Carl said nothing, but his silhouette indicated he nodded his head. I ran my hand over my face. I was making them even more suspicious by the second. "Avery, are you okay?" Carl asked a little afraid of my answer.
"Yeah, just some memories going through my head," I began walking closer to my cell trying to avoid further conversation. "You wanna talk about it?" he asked.
"I'd rather not, Carl. It's a little...," I stopped trying to think of the right words. "It's alright. I get it. I shouldn't of asked," Carl turned away from me and back to his cell. "Carl," I called, but his flashlight turned out and there was no answer. I decided not to push my limits and went to my room with no further word.
I'm scared for my life now. It's already different because Carl thinks I'm hiding something from him now and Daryl knows about my bite. Would they kill me for my stupidity? I couldn't imagine Daryl giving up his word, but he didn't really make a promise. He just didn't kill me since he thought I was a threat.
I let out a heavy sigh when I passed through the doorway of my cell. My head was pounding against my skull and I had nothing to ease the pain. At the moment, I dreaded my life. I shouldn't be complaining since I have a roof over my head, supplies, fences around me, and someone who cares about what I think, Carl. I probably shouldn't say that now. I've only been knowing him for a few hours, but he's the closest person to me at the moment. Carol comes in a close second, but somehow Daryl is at the end. Rick is right before him since he actually granted me a shower.
My cell was pitch black. It was already in the shadows so now add the night. I tried to guess where the corners of the room by feeling the walls. I kicked off my combat boots and unbuckled my belt. I threw the leather strap over the metal bar that acted as a railing for the top bunk. I was too tired to even lay down on the thin mattress, but my sore eyes forced me to. Once the sheets were draped over me, my sight automatically engulfed me in darkness. Soon, sleep consumed me once again.
-The Next Morning-
My eyes began to burn once the sunlight was high enough to reach them. I was about to give up my fight to sleep when hands lightly grasped my shoulders and shook me. I jerked awake to see Carol standing over me with a small smile on her face.
