||Chapter Two||
My room stayed lit. I wasn't that tired since I got a full nights sleep last night and didn't do much today. I mostly stayed awake because I was afraid the stranger was going to come in and decide to kill me, even though he didn't.
Thoughts of what I was going to do next swirled in my head. I could stay here and search for food for awhile and keep myself safe or I could risk my life with Daryl and got out in the open again.
Daryl seemed like he was doing quite well in this world. He's made this far which by the looks of it, hasn't had a scratch. Me on the other hand had too much baggage. I lost an entire group just because the scar on my shoulder. It's a stupid reason for so many lost lives, but it's worth something.
I stared at the ceiling above me to see an off white with a sprinkle of tan. The ceiling was divided into squares so repairmen could easily access the vents.
I shifted in my chair to let other parts of my body collect warmth. I brought my knees up to my chest and rested my heels on the edge of the chair.
Should I stay here or go with Daryl? It seemed like he knew enough to get around. It looked like he survived without a scratch and nothing fazed him.
Or it might be the other way around. He could be clumsy and only made it out with pure luck. I couldn't trust myself with a man who I just know his name. He didn't seem to be a threat so the option to go with him was still wavering in my mind.
-A Week Later-
I barely made it out with my life. A crowd of geeks just surrounded the warehouse. I had it coming. Staying there was too good to be true.
I was back out on my own. Maybe, I should've gone with Daryl. Like he said,"Two heads are better than one."
I trudged closer to whatever shelter I could find. The past few nights I've been sleeping in trees. It's a lot safer than a tent since geeks can't get to you.
I finally found a thick pecan tree with a split in the trunk so I could climb easily to the branches. I placed my foot carefully in the crevasse of the split and hoisted myself up. I placed all my weight on that foot until I found another resting spot for my left one.
I continued the process shifting weight to each each foot one after the other. I grasped branches on my way up. I then made it to a thick, sturdy branch that could hold my weight. I swung my leg over the limb and took out a strap I had. Since sleeping in trees had become a normal thing I needed the supplies.
I hung up my things on other branches and closed my eyes. My muscles were sore and they needed a rest. Soon, I was seeing black behind my eyelids.
---
I awoke to the sound of rustling below me. I lazily opened my eyes to see what was causing the commotion. My strap held me to the tree so I undid it to get a closer look. I sat up straight and glanced under me.
The sun was barely out, but I was able to see two figures jerking back and forth. It seemed to be a geek and some other survivor. They flipped and rolled trying to get the upper hand on the fight. Once the human got on top of the corpse, a spark of recognition ignited in me. The winged vest and ripped sleeves was all I saw. Daryl.
The geek flipped Daryl back on top of him due to Daryl's muscles starting to give out. I panicked as I grabbed my bow quickly and pulled an arrow from its quiver. My fingers fumbled to knock the arrow, but I calmed down once my right hand was to my mouth. I was quick to aim and let go of the string.
The arrow seemed to go in slow motion before piercing the back of the geek's skull. Daryl held the corpse over him in shock as he stared at the arrow tip. I let out a sigh as I watched him throw the body off of him and stand up.
My heart stopped when his head shot towards my direction. He only looked at me for a few seconds before grasping my arrow and yanking it out of the dead geek. He marched closer to my tree, but now stared at the trunk. I thought he was going to climb it, but surprised me when he stuck the arrow in the bark and started to collect his things.
I hadn't noticed, but he seemed to have killed two walkers by shooting one with his crossbow and losing his knife in the other. He yanked his weapons out of the corpses and proceeded with his adventure.
"I don't get a thank you?" I called after him. His eyes shot up towards me before he fully turned around. "What?" he snarled. "You owe me, you know. I gave you shelter and I just saved your ass right there," I pointed to where he scuffled with the geek.
He rolled his eyes and continued walking to wherever he was going. I collected my belongings and started climbing down the tree. I jumped off of it after I was about five feet off the ground. I missed the arrow in the bark by a few inches. I grasped the metal rod and stuck it in my quiver.
I started to jog to catch up with Daryl. I adjusted my bow for attack and waited for him to say something.
He heard my shuffling and turned his head around."What do you want?" he asked over his shoulder. "I thought you wanted me to come with you?" I smirked.
"Yeah, but that was when you had protection. Now, you're just as worthless as I am," he rolled his eyes. I chuckled slightly at the comment, but then turned serious.
"You don't get it do you. Being in a group increases your chances," I said still walking behind him. "Not in my case. I'm doing just fine. I don't need you to slow me down. That means I have to cover your ass when walkers are around," he snorted.
I raised an eyebrow at him,"Well the same for you. That's kinda how the group thing works."
He must've had enough of my endless retorts because he turned around and said almost shouting,"Look, the only reason I asked for you to come with me was because you had an arrow to my head and we were in a warehouse with concrete walls. Now, you don't have that anymore, do you? So just go away before you get me killed!"
"I've lasted this long and you don't think I can handle myself. I've been living alone for eight months and I just saved your life! I know how to survive so don't you think different!" I snapped back at him. He stayed quiet and stared into my eyes.
He then sighed deeply and started to walk away from me. I stayed in the same place not knowing if I won the argument. Daryl glanced back at me and said,"Are you coming or what?"
I smirked slightly and walked a little faster than normal to catch up with him. "So, what are you looking for?" I asked swinging my bow at my side. He rose his eyebrows at me,"Why is it your concern?"
I shrugged my shoulders and stared ahead of us. He let out a heavy sigh,"A way back." I was confused,"To what?"
"My group. I got left behind when a herd of walkers passed by us. I got surrounded and they had to leave or it would've got them too. It's better to let one die than all the others while that person lives."
He was right, especially in our situation.
