Chapter One

Bree and Gia.

I wish I knew sometimes why people decided school was the perfect hell-hole to send your kids to in the middle of the day. Even worse when the teachers decide for you to do a group project that you know you’re not going to be that interested in, even if you happen to get partnered with your best friend.

“This is a project that each of you will have to give an equal amount of work into. I want you to be serious about this end of the year project. It will be due in exactly three weeks; I want all of your topics to be approved by Tuesday of next week, so think about your topics seriously this weekend.” Mrs. Castleberry proudly announced before releasing us as if we were some kind of tied up cattle.

I grabbed my books and immediately waited outside the door for Bree to ask a hundred and one questions as she always did when we had projects.

“So we can’t do abortion I’m guessing?” she asked as Mrs. Castleberry gathered her things.

“That is something you should discuss with your partner Ms. Walker. I told you to really think about it, and make sure it’s something you both want to do.”

“Gia is a good sport she won’t mind doing abortion.”

“eh-hm.” I interrupted giving her the heads up to hurry it up. My Aunt Nanny would have my head if I’m late again today.

Bree looked a little annoyed and kept pestering on at Mrs. C again. “So you won’t mind if we do it?”

“Come back Monday and let me know what the both of you really want to do.”  Mrs. C dismissed her before pushing her out of the door and locking it behind us.

That’s just how Bree Walker liked to be, she couldn’t take no for an answer and she had a knack for being a know it all. I’d always admired that about her till I actually got to know her it was endearing at first but just like Mrs. Castleberry, I quickly realized it wasn’t so admirable when it was happening to you.

“Do you have any ideas for the assignment Gia? I have a feeling she won’t let us do abortion.” She chucked her bag over her shoulder and looked over at me intently.

“Oh you do? So now it’s us?” I gripped my backpack a little tighter trying not to sock my best friend in the face.

“Gia, no need being sore about it I was just going with what popped in my head.”

“You always do that, you never think about anything other than what the Brilliant Bree wants to happen.”

“G, I really do care what you think. You know how I am, when I have an idea I have to run with it.” She always used that as an excuse, as if the fact that us knowing each other since we were in diapers makes up for the fact that she was just being so rude. Half the time it worked and other times she would just bug the living crap out of me about her wanting to be either a camera woman or a reporter one day. She had narrowed it down to two things since we were in the fifth grade. Here we are seniors now and everything seems so close and so far all at the same time.

We walked out of the school and into the bitter cold stinging my nose as we went along. “I think we shouldn’t do abortion anyway. I heard Nicole and Brandon are doing that already.” I offered already knowing she would never want to seem as though she copied anyone else.

“Oh, well then what did you have in mind?”

“I’m not so sure right now but I’m sure we’ll think of something before the end of the weekend.” I assured her.
