Chapter I

Out in that deep January night, the wind picked up its pace and brushed her blushing cheek, the bright, full moon that Beca is gazing upon was more than satisfying and beautiful as the ocean when the sun is setting. She loved that peace the night brings, a contrast to her life when the sun is up. The moonlight made her eyes glow as she thought deeply of how she wished to leave this lifestyle she is in.

She doesn't know how long she had been standing there, but she knows it was long enough for her to head back inside the massive mansion.

Being the daughter of Sebastian Mitchell, a man of great fortune and owner of a powerful Industry, required her to attend the gathering of Mayor Lawrence Stanford that faithful night. It was a gathering of powerful bachelor's in town that the Mayor holds each beginning of the year, but it was Beca's first official invite to the assembly. Men and women in lavish gowns and expensive jewelry crowded the ballroom of the Mayor's mansion and Beca knew exactly why the party wad held, it was to connect powerful families through romantic ties and to resolve feuds through the younglings and Beca couldn't help but scoff at the idea.

They were a crowd of beautiful women and handsome men but none of them stirred Beca's emotions or desires to even make her want to talk to them, hence why she was outside in the balcony, enjoying the peace and quiet that seems like only the night could offer. Though, she had been outside for long, a time too long for the Mayor to notice and look for her. The man of town was quiet aware of who she is because among the bachelors there, she belongs to the most powerful in town.

Sighing to herself, Beca blew the last of her smoke and threw the bud on the ground, stumping it with her boot before she finished her fancy cocktail, adjusting her brown blazer over her maroon dress. After making sure that she looked presentable enough, Beca opened the double doors to the balcony and paused for a moment when the noise and the heat of the room came out to greet her. Scanning the now crowded room Beca found her unfortunate companion that night, sitting by the bar.

"I can't believe I went with you..." Was the grumbled acknowledgement to her from her cousin Stacie, extending a graceful hand to offer the shorter brunette another drink that was beside her own since they arrived.

Smirking at her scowling cousin, Beca received the offered beverage,"I don't see why you're upset, your 'Hunter' can go hunt tonight for rich bachelors." Beca chuckled when she felt Stacie smack her arm lightly, the teasing comment though made her smirk.

"This party is just boring the hell out of me, I'm more for the wild-lake-side-party minda girl." Stacie admitted, turning her gaze to observe the grand hall, filled with posh pretentious people,"Everyone is being fancy and fake." Beca laughed at her cousin's commentary, more so when Stacie made a disgusted face,"I don't think anyone is planning to even be actually true with anyone here, they're all doing this for power and connections, are they not?"

"It's the whole point of why these gatherings are celebrated, Ms. Conrad." Balthazar, Beca's servant, testified as he took his place on Beca's left side, Stacie sitting on a stool on her right, Beca nodding her head as Stacie further voiced her protest for being there.

"If I was looking for rich bachelor's, I'd go for our hot step-uncle..." Stacie divulged, winking at her shorter friend who again laughed at the taller brunette, Balthazar joining the laughter.

"That's going to be impossible since Uncle Alex is dead serious on being just our uncle." Beca snickered at girl, Balthazar now observing the crown with them as he stood silently by their side.
