The scratching of silver ware is one of my greatest pet peeves and it was occurring all around our breakfast table. Until it stopped. Almost all the noise in the room ceased and I had no idea why that was. That was until I heard the door close and a group of dark teenagers standing before. They looked like trouble and guessing by everyones blank faces, they were.

"Who are they?" I questioned and some of the dark faces shot towards me.

"He's a shady." replied Amber. He?

Then my eyes laid on him and my heart quickened. His eyes were locked on mine and I was begging for the key. He seemed amused by my struggling almost as though he could read my mind. Then I remembered that wasn't entirely impossible anymore.

A shady was what Austin accused me of absorbing before Vi died. Could one of them be the reason why she's dead? I scanned the group but didn't see any familiar faces. But the only face that I kept landing on was his. Shady was the right title for such a dark, tall guy before me. He had black hair, blue eyes, and a smirk that would knock any girl off their feet. That is, of course, excluding me.

"So when Mr.Shady walks in we all are supposed to stop breathing? Why is everyone so silent? He's just some guy."

I remarked and everyone at the table stared at me. Scratch that, everyone in the Dining Hall stared at me. Along with him.

"Because they know their place. And I suggest your learn yours quickly." the dark boy spoke.

"The only thing here that needs to be taught is respect. Don't think you can walk into a room and take breaths away and when you don't, act like a jackass. Get your food, eat it, then leave like everyone else princess." I shot back. I wasn't scared of anyone. Even, a shady.

"What did you just do Scarlett?" yelled Peyton the second the Shades left. She was a preppy girl in my History class and she seemed terrified.

"He obviously is too stuck up for his own good. Besides, he left. Which means he knows whats good for him. What's his ability anyway?" I asked.

"He bends minds. He can make you think what he wants and puts things in your mind Scarlett. He could drive you mad in seconds." answered Amber.

Not showing how frightened I truly was, I shrugged. Playing mind games is for cowards.

Waiting patiently for 12 to come so I could go to my lesson, my mysterious room mate entered. It had been almost two weeks and she still hadn't made conversation since the first day I arrived. Time to break the silence.

"What's your name? We never really covered the basics." I introduced friendly.

"Nigeria" she replied coldly. Her black hair was pushed back and looked perfectly effortless. Her bone structure could cut you if you got too close. And by the dangerous look in her blue eyes, no one tries to get that close.

"What's your ability?" I asked. "Don't tell me it's life threatening."

"I'm not a Shady, don't worry." she said while crossing to our couch. Shady. I had heard it too many times to be uninformed.

"What the hell is a Shady and why are they so popular?" I replied.

"Each Keepers got a gift. Shades have dark powers. Blood bending. Mind bending." she stared at me playfully letting me know she was in the Dining Hall that morning. "The touch of death. They're dangerous and everyone knows it. Besides, people say things."

"What kind of things?" I asked.

"Our job in life is to protect one mortal that is destined for greatness and make sure they stay out of harm. Coming from rumors or Shades ex girlfriends, Shades don't protect their mortals. They kill them." Nigeria let out. "Just don't cross paths with them. You never know what they have up their sleeve."

Whether it was my gut or Keeper senses, something told me Shades had answers I had been searching for.
