Why was she following him?
She didn't even know him. He walked at a brisk pace, but she had no trouble keeping up. They walked through dense forest for what seemed to be hours, until the sun was setting in beautiful amber streaks across the tops of the treeline. Following in Jays footsteps was quite odd, he seemed rather tall from far away but when approached was just maybe five or six inches taller than Ashley, this made it easier for her to try to match his long strides in the game she was playing to dull her boredom.
When the sun had completely set, Ashley started to sincerely regret her choice in clothing. Dark jeans, a light blue tank top and black cardigan just were not working any more. She was freezing cold and could not contain the shiver that was sent through her as she hugged her arms in an attempt to rid herself of the sudden chills.
"Are you cold?" Jay asked, a concerned expression on his face.
"No, I'm fine." Ashley immediately answered when she realised he was offering her his jacket, which was awfully tempting...
"Are you sure? Because you shivered and then hugged your arms if that's not a sign of being cold I don't know what is." She shook her head and the silence between them continued as it had before.
"So...-" She began but was rather rudely cut off.
"We're here." Jay said a look of almost happiness on his face.
In front of them was a sight to behold. A waterfall glistening in the moonlight with a small pool near the base, the water sent out little ripples where the shimmery froth of the waterfall hit it.
"Wow..." Ashley said in awe. "What is this place?"
"This is the place of the taken, or at least that's it's official name, but it's a little thing I like go call, home." He said it with so much admiration for the place Ashley had never been, she decided to believe him. She looked again at the pool. She wished she could go swim in it, it seemed so inviting. She hadn't been swimming since... since, that day...
She didn't want to see the images she had been holding back but it was too late, she saw them for what seemed like the millionth time since it happened. A car-flashing lights everywhere a little sister sitting beside her in a car seat- then all of a sudden nothing, and no little sister.
She couldn't stop the tears the sprung to her eyes, there wasn't a day that went by that she didn't think of it, she just hadn't had the vivid visions in a while.
Jay looked at her for a moment before looking away. As if pretending not to notice. She brushed the droplets of moisture from her eyes and looked down at the floor. Looking up when she noticed Jay moving forward toward the rock.
He placed his hand on the surface, muttering something she couldn't quite hear before he side-stepped into the waterfall.
Ashley took a deep breath and followed.
--------
She didn't feel the waterfall around her. She saw the way that it flickered a golden colour at the imperfection where she stood, almost as if it were a hologram. She felt so peaceful just stood there listening to the water around her. Until she felt what she could only describe as feel in like an invisible brick wall hit her from behind and launched her into a spiralling tunnel of water. Her limbs were flailing everywhere and she was moving quite quickly, even for her standards. The surface of the water around her changed and moulded. Until it was showing her seens of what seemed to be a perfect life.
There were four people sat at a picnic table, chewing on dainty sandwiches and drinking fresh lemonade. the people were her and her family. How it all should have been and should have stayed. A mother and a father, expecting a new child. Staring lovingly at there two existing children, two siblings, one male one female, the boy was older and was protective over the younger sister. How much she craved that life. Hoe much she wanted it. How much she would trade to have it.
Jay was stood perfectly normally in front of her, composed and his arms and legs were tucked firmly by his side, how she didn't know. The tears were welling again, why was she so emotional? Why was the past always popping up? She hadn't really looked at Jay properly before, but the way the light his face was beautiful. His cheekbones were pronounced just perfectly so that when the light did catch them... it was perfect. What an odd thing to think... Ashley thought.
Thankfully, he didn't turn to witness her spying. She didn't even get chance to process what she had been doing before the was suddenly flying through mid air with her eyes squeezed firmly shut. She landed seconds later on what she thought wad the ground. Laying there for a few seconds before wondering where Jay had gone, he had been in front of her In the water tunnel. She heard an amused groan of pain coming from underneath her. Oops. She climbed of him.
"Sorry..." Said Ashley. a little embarrassed by her landing.
"Its okay, your not very heavy. You just squished me... a bit." "He said jokingly. She hit him in the arm with what she imagined to be a forceful punch.
He faked a very hurt very sad face. And before she knew it they were both actually laughing. She realised he had stopped and he was looking at her with a confused look.
"What?" Asked Ashley, worried she had actually update him somehow.
"I'm not really sure..." he said then just looked at her for a second longer.
Ashley turned away, and looked around them. They had landed in a beautiful meadow, which lots of small cottage like houses and people milling about everywhere. Somehow nobody had notice the random people landing on the ground out of nowhere.
Her eyes caught on a girl in her late teens or early twenties walking towards them, a look that wasn't too happy on her face. She was very beautiful, with dark ringlets of hair gathering around her shoulders, her face was petite and very doll like. She was wearing a deep blue velvety garment with gold beading and threading. She looked fantastic in the simple ensemble.
When she got to them she leaned up a little and placed a kiss of her perfect lips onto Jays smiling ones.
Oh.
