Merlin
"Ah, I love the smell of fresh cow manure." I spoke sarcastically hoping to get a reaction from Alec. He ignored me, staring out the car window like an amused dog. He must be enjoying a new country.
"I've never been to the UK. Will we pass London?!" He turned, his long fire hair smacking my in the face. He turned to window again hitting me once more.
"Would you stop, and no, sorry. London's the other direction." I drove into the long driveway going deep into the forest. Alec adjusted in his seat, a confused look on his face. "What is it?" I asked as I parked in front of the cottage I bought a few years back.
"This is where you went, what, six years ago? When you were still old?"
I sigh and nod "The lake is hidden, by me and an old powerful apprentice. The tree that binds it is only a little ways from here." I step out. "Since Thaddeus has died I'm the only person who can access the lake, with or without a companion." Alec followed me inside the cottage. My elderly friend Mariann has taken care of it since I've been in America. Everything was exactly the same. My navy blue sofa was still in its lame position in the middle of the common room facing the old thick TV on the oak entertainment center. I look to Alec who was braiding his hair from his face.
"You really need to cut your hair."
"I'll just grow my beard instead." Alec had always been a large man. Even now at 30 he's like a red head bear. I don't know how I forget these things. Maybe its his child-like nature.
"You're going to look like a lumberjack."
"Ooh!" The wind rushed in slamming all the open doors into the walls. The air sent a chill down my spine as he closed the door. Something had been here. It was near and dangerous.
I sped down the stairs to the basement where all my spell books, the occasional weapon, and potions were kept. I noticed the light had broken on the floor. Alec lit a bright white light from his palm. He held his hand up as I searched for the right book. The spell will allow me to see whatever living thing that has been inside or around my cottage and how many.
"Those two bottles over there and that powder." I demanded.Alec did as as told and brought what I needed to the table. I spoke the spell while pouring the contents of the two bottles onto bowl of powder. Red, blue, and violet smoke lifted into the air showing Alec and I every living thing that was in the cottage for the last six year. To them nothing or the amount of any were out of the ordinary.
"Whatever was recently here wasn't living." I spoke. "We must put a shield around to anything dead around the house.""I could do it now?"
"Wait a few hours. I'm going to pay my respects to an old friend."
"Hello Arthur." I smiled seating myself o a boulder. "Long time no see." The water rippled as if Arthur were to say 'Hello' back.
Otters played in the mud, sliding into the water and tossing pebbles at each other. I silently watched drifting off to the sound of their chatter.I awoke absolutely soaked in rain, the clouds still pouring. It was pitch black and so misty I could hardly see. Alec must be so worried. I sprinted back through the tall invisible door in the tree and back to the cottage. Alec sat in the dining room reading one of the spell books while pots and pans washed themselves in the sink.
"Really, you couldn't have done it yourself?"
"I made dinner."
I scoff and walk to my bedroom. I snatched some of my clothes from the dresser and slipped into a hot shower. The visions have returned after two months but suddenly just stop after returning? A good thing Alec never knew about it. I hated that hospital.
I sat on the floor of the tub for who knows how long. The water had gotten cold and my stomach grumbled for the first time in days. I got dressed and headed to the kitchen for food. Alec had passed out watching some American show with apparently lots of guns and mythical creatures. I sat with my spaghetti next to snoring Alec and found myself engrossed in the show.
