Thunder boomed and lightning struck as the first splatter of rain fell. This is what April showers were all about; Mother Nature’s way of knocking on the earths’ soil, awaking it from its deep slumber called winter. Joyful sounds of children jumping in puddles were heard as the birds chirped their songs. This postcard perfection scenery did not guarantee that everything was perfectly peaceful, for it is not what it seems to be.
On this day 1st of April 2000 life would change a 16 year old girl. Dr. Cain Smith was held at gun point in his home. For the safety of his family he obliged to his kidnappers by entering the black van without a fight, his hands behind his head. Dr. Smith was a middle aged man, with a hint of silver dusted on his dark hair. His honest ice blue eyes held knowledge that would act as either a disadvantage or an advantage to him, depending on your perspective.
Once in the van, he was blindfolded and restrained by a handcuff. As scared as he was, he calmed his beating heart and jumping nerves by taking in deep lungful breathes of air. Shaking his head, trying to reduce the effect of adrenaline flowing in his bloodstream, Dr. Cain began reciting the periodic table mentally off chart, for it helped calm his nerves when in despair. After a couple of minutes he was able to think logically. Trying to piece together events to help understand his current situation failed, for he was an honest doctor. Working in a big hospital proved to be difficult due to the long shifts and the constant struggle of trying to save a life, but with the years, the routine became a norm, but at night he would awake screaming from a nightmare because at the end of the day, no matter how much you toughen your heart and create layers and layers of steel to feel nothing, we are still human.
An abrupt stop halted his thoughts from proceeding and he was roughly dragged out of the van. Dragged up a flight of stairs, a door was pushed open and he felt a gust of conditioned air. Sensing his abductors unlocking his restrains, he was pushed roughly forward and his blindfold was jerked off. What greeted him was a man in an expensive black suit, with hard, steel dark eyes. He looked like an ordinary business man, but there was a certain dark aura radiating off of him, giving a mysterious and dangerous vibe. His hair, black and slick, looked artificial under the intense lighting of the room. Dr. Smith’s observations were done expertly fast due to his profession. Trying to regain his dignity Dr. Smith stood upright and stared into the man’s dark eyes.
The staring competition lasted for a few minutes before a smirk played at the edge of the man’s thin lips. He introduced himself as Mr. Lavinski which sounded fake to Dr. Smiths' ears, and began murmuring what was expected from Dr. Smith. With every sentence slipping out of Mr. Lavinski's mouth, Dr. Smith became more and more agitated. What was expected of him went against what he stood for and against the oath he swore to when receiving his medical license. Mr. Lavinski directed the terrified doctor into a modern lab with modern technology seen everywhere. He then began touring Dr. Smith around the lab, trying to familiarize him with the chemicals he’ll be forced to use. Plastering a blank expression on his face, with his heart hammering in his chest, Dr. Smith turned to Mr. Lavinski saying he had no clue what these alien chemicals he was seeing were. Again, a slight smirk played on Mr.Lavinski's thin lips. He then flicked his hand in the air and a guard brought a book forward. Upon seeing the book cover, Dr. Smith knew that from that moment onwards all bets were off.
It was his book. A book he never published for the fear of it getting into the wrong persons hands, and there was only one person whom he shared the book with. Only one person he trusted with this lethal weapon. And here he was, staring at that very same book, with his name sprawled in cursive on the cover. He was so proud of himself when he sprawled his name carelessly across the cover, but after some deep thought and a glass of whiskey, he decided to lock it in a safe, where no harm could be done with it. Every ingredient needed in the experiment was either illegal or rare and expensive. Never in his wildest imagination did he ever think he would come face to face with the ingredient’s he desperately wanted back in the days when he was still naïve and young. Trying to suppress a shiver, his eyes shot to Mr. Lavinski’s dark probing ones.
All the time while Mr. Lavinski toured him around the lab, Dr. Smith failed to see a still figure lying on a bed. Upon noticing it, he turned a questioning eye to Mr. Lavinski. Sweeping his hand in a fashionably manner, he declared that the patient in the bed was Dr. Smith’s experiment. Mr. Lavinski then slowly walked towards the exit, pausing to look around, he then slowly ticked off with his fingers each member of the doctor’s family, saying their lives were in Dr. Smith’s hands, and that he better do a good job.
Shutting the door behind him, the door clicked shut, the windows closed automatically and steel coverings came down completely closing him from the outside world. He heard camera’s zooming in on him and it was that moment that Dr. Smith felt like repeating his medical oath, for he felt as if he was losing it.
“I will prescribe regimens for the good of my patients according to my ability and my judgment and never do harm to anyone”.
He kept on repeating this part of the oath, holding onto it for the sake of his sanity. It was what he held onto from the very first time he touched a needle, and now he was doing the exact same motion he did 20 years ago, only this time he was doing it while breaking the oath. His last thought was that he will never forgive himself, before shutting himself from all emotions and focusing on the task ahead.
