Ethan's POV
I couldn't get to sleep so I decided to message Maria and we both decided to meet up at the park around the corner of her house.
We would usually just sit around the playground and talk for hours. It was always just a private place to hang out and talk especially at night. A line of thick trees surrounded the playground, creating a wall of sorts.
We were just talking for a while before Maria playfully hit me on the shoulder and said "We should play hide and seek"
"What are you? Five years old?" I say. It may sound immature for us to play hide and seek at this age but it did seem like it would be good fun.
"Mentally yes" she giggled. "Now go to the trees and count to 30"
"Okay but if I find you, I get a kiss"
"Better start counting then" she said pushing me off into the direction of the trees.
I counted to 30 and when I was done my first instinct was of course to check the playground and if she wasn't there I'd move onto the picnic bench area.
I grab my phone out of my back pocket and turn on my flashlight. I stepped from the grass onto the wood fibre mulch surrounding the playground. I aim my phone up to the playground because I'm too lazy to go out there if I didn't have to.
You know those big plastic circular things with a bunch of tiny holes in it that a lot of playgrounds have? Maybe not but there was one of those things up at the highest level of the playground.
Through a bunch of holes I could see what appeared to be skin and a jacket but what stood out the most was her eye peering through one of the holes, instead of going up there right away I decided it would be kind of fun to mess with her.
I waved my phone's flashlight around the playground pretending like I didn't see her. I was going to walk to the picnic area, turn the flashlight on my phone off, walk around to the trees, back to the playground, sneak up on her and scare the living daylight out of her. I don't know why, I just wanted to.
I walk to the picnic area, shut off the flashlight and snuck back over to the playgrounds. I was careful not to make noise as I creeped through the wood chips that the playground sat on.
Before I could even step foot on the first platform of the playground something grabbed my arm and pulled me. I screamed but stopped when I heard Maria's laughter. I turned my phone flashlight back on and was relieved to see it was her. The prank obviously backfired completely.
"Don't ever do that to me again" I say pulling her into a hug. She still continued to laugh which makes me smile.
"Well, I'm not perfect. That means I'll annoy you, piss you off and say stupid things"
"And then you'll take it all back. But if I put all that aside, I'll never find someone who cares or loves me more than you" I say biting my bottom lip.
I pull her in closer. Her lips were barely brushing against mine and by this point she was driving me crazy. I started kissing her slowly but soon the kiss got really deep and passionate. One of my hands was on her face and I pushed her hair out of her face as we moved with the kiss.
My other hand was around her waist, and as the kiss got more and more intense, I pulled her as close as possible to me. She also kept pulling me closer too with her hands which were around my neck. At this point we were both breathing really heavily and sighing, so every once in a while I would pull back and just give little pecks so that we could catch our breathe.
She kept teasing me by pulling away slightly. I gave her a one last deep and long kiss to end it. After that we went back up to the second level platform of the playground that we always chilled at.
I asked Maria if she knew that I saw her behind the plastic thing at the top of the playground but she was confused. She acted as if she never went up there. I explained to her that I saw someone up there.
We both looked up as the tiny creaking sounds we had been hearing every so often suddenly made a disturbing amount of sense. I aimed the light up there which revealed someone's head hunched over the railing of the platform above us.
At the same time we heard footsteps kicking the wood chips around right below the platform we were sitting on. I made the first move and grabbed Maria's hand and ran. I turned off my flashlight on my phone as we ran which wasn't long as Maria's house was right around the corner.
We went to her room, shut the curtains and she insisted that I stay at hers for the night. That night we both couldn't get to sleep, just thinking about who that person could've been just sent shivers down my spine.
