song: drive by oh wonder
(set in season 4)
We sat back with the windows down, driving eighty an hour, playing the same songs with the same ol' rhymes. After our most recent argument, Sam told me to "just drop it". How could I drop it when my little brother was drinking demon blood left and right! What does he think I'm doing? Swinging from a vine! I'm trying to help him! Why can't he see that?
At that moment, I just wanted to drive away from all of it. All the fighting and suffering, all the times Sam left to go with Ruby, all the mess he made.
The hurricane of thoughts that was drowning Dean was just too much. The older brother worried Sam's habit won't go away.
I know I have to be here for Sammy. I know what John said. But that doesn't make it's easy.
"Sammy. I can't do this anymore." Dean said as he pulled over, rolling into a shallow ditch.
Laughing at the threat, Sam rolled his eyes.
"You're hyped on this demon juice and you gotta quit. It's too hard for me to watch you like this."
"Oh you're kidding. Just keep driving." Sam reached for the keys, attempting to turn the key that would start the Impala.
"Sam. No. No matter what I do it's not enough." Sam laughed again. "Dammit, Sam. Look at you! It's like you've lost your soul!" Dean glanced down at his hands on the wheel. Fuck. This isn't helping.
"Listen, Dean." The little brother's face softened. A fake soft. He didn't mean the sincerity and Dean knew it. He only threw up this facade because it was his routine lie. "I'll be okay."
"Yeah, sure." Dean wasn't convinced but didn't poke at it any longer.
"What's that supposed to mean." Sam questioned as Dean just shrugged. "No, Dean. Spit it out."
Clearing his throat, Dean readied for another verbal fight. "It's funny how you think you can blindside me."
"Oh please, I-"
"The same ol' songs Sam, same lies." Dean just shook his head in disappointment. Can't just leave Sammy here, but I rather be anywhere else right now. I just want to drive away from the mess he's made. Dean thought once again, all too aware that the older brother played a part in this phycological hurricane.
"Please believe me, Dean. I'll be okay. I can handle this." And with that, Dean left it alone, tired of the back and forth that got the two nowhere. The older brother turned the keys, starting up the Impala once again.
Loving you is too hard, Sammy. Dean wanted to say, attempting to hold back worried tears. This only leaves me hurt. All I do, no matter what I do, I get burned. How am I supposed to help you, Sammy? I can't do this. I can't anymore.
"See, I remember all the times you made me. I'll admit, I was covered in crazy. But you've been the same place as me, Dean. You made me believe you were fine."
"Yeah and look were that got me?" Dean claimed, raising his hands in the air. "But that ended long ago." Sam huffed out a laugh. "Fine, just that ended. Just let it go. I'm done arguing."
And with the last bit of strength Sam had, he began the silence during the drive with five heartbreaking words.
"Then just let me go."
