Meeting Him

I was young, innocent, and new to the world. My mother had recently gone through a tear-stained divorce ripping us away from the city we had lived in our entire lives and into a small town that is barely on a map. The first day of school was the hardest, I was shy but outspoken, and my long chestnut hair unkempt and frizzy in the humid southern heat. I hid behind my teacher and scanned the small classroom taking in the full twelve people staring at me. My eyes roamed over each of their faces their names filtering in and out of my mind until one name was called in annoyance. I was trapped by the mischievous chocolate eyes staring back at me. It was as if my world finally slowed down enough for me to catch up as I shamelessly stared. His black hair was neatly brushed and his tan skin was much darker than my sheet-white self. At that moment I knew I was in trouble, but my heart loved it. For years we would fight, flirting in a painful way that children do. In high school, though everything had changed. I had decided to stop chasing and instead try to give someone else a chance, yet I only ended up heartbroken after noticing I would never be able to actually love him. So I decided to let my distraction go, and stop dating altogether. Though my childhood crush had other plans and swept in in a darker time in my life. His charm lured me in, his earthy scent, dark eyes, and optimistic ways kept me enraptured. How could such a happy person love such a fool as me? I was just a girl, who had been through so much, I was tainted, but he didn't care. He wrapped up my mental wounds with healing words and loving actions. Without him, I don't think I would have made it, but with him, I feel like I can accomplish anything. He isn't my world, he's my solar system, and without him, I would fall out of orbit.
