ERIC POV
First day on the job, I'm excited and nervous. I'm now serving my country, I am now protecting everything this country has. I have to be serious I have to be collected. Today is the day my life begins.
As I walk into the hall where I will be staying I notice many things guys greeting each other, bunks being made, people unpacking the small amount of things they have. I turn to find my bunk and drop my bag. I look at the bed that will be mine for the next four years, I'm ready for this.
After I unpacked my things I made my way down to the dining hall where a meeting will be held. General Howard stand in front of all the men.
"Stand." he says in a monotone voice
We all rise and stand looking forward.
"First of all I'd like to say welcome to the United States Army. thank you for serving...." he continues
I lose interest in what he is saying because I already know all of this. my father was part of the service so this was my life. I look around slightly to see the men that will become my brothers and my family. we will protect each other and work together because we are now a family. I look back at the general.
"That will be all for this meeting, go back to your bunks until dinner is announced."
We about face and walk out I make my way to my bunk and look at my picture of my family, that is all I have of them for 4 years. I hear heavy footsteps beside me. I turn and see another Private who looks unfamiliar.
"Hello Private." I say saluting him
"Hey." he says with a smile. I'm surprised by his lack of formality
"What's your name Private?" He asks
"Stanley. Eric Stanley." I say extending my hand out offering a handshake
"Well Eric, I'm Todd Wade. It's a pleasure to have you as a bunk mate." He firmly takes my hand and shakes it.
"You can consider me your friend now being that it seems like all the others are taken." he says laughing to him self
"Good I need a friend around here."
Just then over the loud speaker the staff announces that dinner is ready in the mess hall. Todd and I walk out the doors and find ourselves a table next to a few other privates. Todd sits across from me and smiles invitingly. They call us by table so when they call us I follow Todd. After we got out food and sat down I started asking Todd question about himself.
"So Todd, where are you from?"
"If you're always going to be so formal I should start brushing up on my vocabulary." he said laughing
"Sorry, but seriously."
"California. you?" he asked
"I'm from New York.'' I say kind if shamefully because I've never been fond of New York. I hate the snow and the people and the shirt summer months. but California, that's
something I would love to see.
"I've always hated New York" he says as if he were reading my mind. I look up at his face and I see his pale blue almost grey eyes. I look down and chuckle a little.
not here, please Eric not here
"Why so shy Private?" he asks with a bit of humor in his voice he smiles widely
''Maybe its because you're so intimidating" I say with confidence laughing.
"is that so, Private Stanley?" he says in a stern voice, my smile disappears because now i'm afraid that i've disrespected him.
"Dude, chill I was joking." he says starting to become hysterical with laughter. I sigh in relief and stand up to go back to the bunks.
"I'm going to head in. Are you top bunk or bottom bunk Private?"
"I'll go with you and I prefer top." he says as he turns around to say goodnight to the other Privates. We are walking into the bunks and he turns to me and he says
"I'm scared, Eric I've never been so scared in my life. I thought I knew what I was doing, but now, I have no clue." he says staring into my eyes. I am shocked at his confession. come to think of it im scared too.
"I'm scared too, my father has prepared me for this his entire life and I'm still scared." I respond
Todd nods his head and smiles walking over to our bunks he stops and starts removing his uniform.
Eric, turn away you cannot do this here. look away. Now.
I walk nonchalantly over to the bunk and duck behind Todd with out trying to look. I wait untill he is lying down on his bed until I start removing my uniform. Afterwards I lie down and start thinking about what the hell i'm
doing.
of course even here you find a way to ruin things. Do not disappoint your father again.
All these thoughts are bouncing around in my mind. I have to shut them down, I have to sleep. I close my eyes and enjoy the rest.
