I can remember my turning as if it were yesterday. Every little detail fresh in my mind from who turned me to how it felt. I remember what happened before the bite and what I was feeling.

"Danica!" I heard my name being shouted from across the street. I looked over and there is Autumn, my non-friend, friend. She ran over, determination in every step.

I rolled my eyes in annoyance. Autumn always had a bone to pick with me. I'm surprised she still had things to argue with me about. I continued to walk as she came up beside me. "What is it this time, Autumn?" I sighed.

"You did it again," she accused. Her glare was cold and hard.

"Did what?" I demanded.

She grabbed my shoulder and pulled me to a stop. "Bullied Belinda," she stated angrily.

Belinda Knight. The smart, quiet, shy girl of Locksdale High School. Obviously, she was an easy target for bullying, and not just by me. Belinda had been the mousy type since elementary school. She had hardly any friends and the teachers were wrapped around her little finger. All in all, Belinda was the perfect candidate for excessive bullying, especially since she didn't stand up for herself.

"Yeah, so?" I shoved out of Autumn's grasp and continued my walk home.

"I don't get you, Danica," she called out to me. "Belinda's done nothing to deserve your torment on her! Nothing!"

"She was born," I mumbled. Giving a half-hearted wave over my shoulder, I continued to walk on, ignoring Autumn's continuous shouts.

The sun was low, creating a warm golden glow on my skin. Picking up my pace, I hurried along, not wanting to get a big lecture from my mom about being out past curfew. I could see my apartment building when a sharp gasp grabbed my attention. I looked over into a narrow alley. The further back it went, the darker it got.

"Hello?" I said into the darkness. The gasp came again. "Is someone there?" I heard a gargled cough and peeked further into the alley. "Do you need help? Want me to call an ambulance for you?"

"Thirsty," came a raspy voice. "So thirsty."

"You're thirsty?" I dug into my backpack and took out an unopened bottle of kiwi-strawberry flavored water. I may be mean, but I wasn't inhuman. "Here," I said, "you can have my water."

There was movement. A dark figured came closer to where I stood and fell back against the wall, crashing into something.

"Are you okay?" I called out to the person.

"Thirsty," it croaked.

I looked around. No one else was on the street. Seeing no other choice, I stepped into the shadows of the alley and approached the bent over person. "Here." I stretched the water bottle out to the hunched figure. A sharp, painful gasp slipped from my throat as a cold, bony hand enclosed my wrist. The grip was so tight, the bottle fell from my hand.

With a quickness I couldn't comprehend, the figure stood up and slammed me into the wall, knocking my breath out. Before I could suck in air to scream, they bent their head to my neck, and two sharp teeth sank into my skin. Black dots started to appear in my vision, until my world was clouded in darkness.

I woke up with a coppery taste in my mouth, and my neck throbbing. I didn't know where I was. I looked about me. I was in some sort of hospital room. Though, it was like no hospital room I've ever seen before. I jumped as a tall pale woman carrying a clipboard practically floated into the room. She looked over to me and smiled. Two teeth seemed unusually long.

"Well, it's good to see you're up!" she said brightly.

"Where am I?" I tried to stand up, only to lose my footing and fall back onto the cot like bed.

"You're in the infirmary," she explained. "And you haven't fed yet, so you may just want to sit back and relax until Nolan comes back with your blood."

"My what?!"

She frowned at me. "Your blood, dear. What else?"

"You took my blood?!"

She sat her clipboard down and came closer to me. "Your blood?..... D-do you not know what you are?" When I didn't answer she mumbled something that sounded like, "I'm gonna have to knock some sense in that boy." Then she looked at me and said louder, "What's your name?"

"Danica?" I meant for it to be a statement, but it turned out sounding like a question.

"Danica," she said while nodding and jotting down on her clipboard. "Well, Danica, what do you remember before waking up?"

I told her about school and my encounter with Autumn. Then I mentioned the alley. The alley. The thirsty person. The same person who slammed me up against a wall and.... And, what? And..... Bit me! I started to freak out and the woman came and held me down, shushing me.

"You were bitten by a vampire," she explained once I calmed down. "He gave you some of his blood after he fed off you, and now....."

"What?..... And now what?"

"You're a vampire, Danica."

I sat there in shock. What was she on about? Vampires? Vampires weren't real.

"This is a school for non-human students, Danica. It's a special school, for special beings." She leaned forward. "That includes you now."

I stood to my feet with a quickness I never knew. Feeling a bit dizzy, I leaned against the wall for support. "I'm not a vampire!"

She looked at me with sadness in her grey eyes.

"There's no such things as vampires! You're crazy! I-I want to go home."

She came slowly towards me. "You're a vampire now, Danica. Whether you like it or not, you are. Like so many others here at Shady High."

"Shady High? You mean that creepy school that was abandoned fifty years ago?"

"Not really. Only thought to be."

Just then a boy about my age, maybe a year or two older, came in, cup in hand. His hair was dark and had a bedhead style. His eyes a piercing blue and skin of porcelain. I watched him with fascination. He was beautiful. Like no other boy I'd ever seen before. He handed the woman the cup and looked at me with his intense gaze.

"Danica, this is Skyler. The one who turned you."

My eyes narrowed at him. Suddenly, he wasn't so beautiful to me anymore. Now, he was a hideous creature with a disgusting secret who punctured my skin with his dripping fangs, and made me taste his coppery blood.

"Skyler, be a good boy, and bring Simone here."

When he left I asked, "Who's Simone?"

"She's a witch, and your new room mate. Welcome to Shady High, Danica." She handed me the cup and walked behind her desk, continuing to fill out the clipboard.

'Welcome, indeed,' I thought.
