Chapter 2: The Water's Call

~~Zarah~~

How does a lonely soul survive in the dark woods of Northern Minnesota? Alone and broken? The answer is simple. You don't.

Yet somehow, I've managed for days without food, water, or any interaction between another living being. The fifteen claw marks on the stone wall taunted me, reminding me every morning that the one that should have loved me, left me to this.

He never physically told me to leave I suppose but his eyes said enough. Who would ever love an omega? The answer to this is also simple. You don't.

Need I say any more about my crumbling mental state.

I have seen the effects of these woods first hand, I've seen the insanity they can bring to a lone wolf. But I didn't dare venture out of them. The fear of seeing him was too great, too painful. It didn't ease my hurt with the knowledge that my brother and sister were probably with him right now, laughing and not even noticing my absense in their life.

I laid on the cold stone, watching the water from a nearby puddle, be refracted onto the gray roof. The water called to me every now and then, telling me how amazing it would be to see my parents again, to join them wherever they may roam. I have considered it's offer but never taken the plunge, I do plan on living my life if I ever make it out of these forests.

I wasn't quite sure if I was in between packs or inside of pack territory but every now and then men would silently walk by, either patrolling or just taking a stroll.

"Did you hear from the Cresant Wood Pack yet?" A deep voice echoed through the once silent woods, and as if reading my scattered thoughts, the sound of two men walking through the underbrush caused me to jump from my place on the moist ground. Silently rushing farther back into the cave, I slipped and fell ungracefully into the bone-chilling water.

The echoing of their feet on the cave walls halted abruptly and they began to whisper as I shivered in the water, not daring to move a muscle. My teeth began to chatter as the water seeped through my thin sweater and froze my bones.

"Nore, look at this." A different voice said. This time his voice was closer and I realized they had found my cave, panic filled me. I took a deep breath and submerged myself as quietly as possible under the icy water, hoping that they would leave soon.

Opening my eyes under the crystal clear water I looked upwards, longing for the oxygen I didn't know if I could reach. The edges of my vision began to darken and the waters alluring call beckoned me once again, the choice was made even before I could really process what I had decided. Either die a painful, torturous death in a rot filled prison or die peacefully now with the light sway of the water caressing my aching bones.

With one last release of life-giving breath, I let go and my eyes closed, welcoming the darkness as it swirled about me like octopus ink. I was finally free.

~~Nore~~

The loud sound of something falling into water caught our ears as we patroled the pack lines.

"Did you hear that?" Maric whispered beside me.

"Be quiet, unless you want to loose a possible rouge." I roughly replied, the hatred for those things clear in my voice.

"Where did it come from?" His voice was quieter this time, but it still rang through the trees. Lifting my nose to the air I followed the fresh sent of moss, which would be the most likely thing to lead us to water.

"Nore, look at this." Following the loud sound of Maric's voice I was astonished to find a cave. It was only a few feet deep, but it was beautiful. My eyes caught onto claw marks on the stone wall, a tally count of some sort. I grazed my fingers over the rough stone, as if I could see who had placed them there. Maric watched me with wary eyes, unsure of what to do.

"Check the pond." He mock saluted me and made his way towards the back of the now dark cave.

"Noredan." My full name pulled me from the thoughts bouncing around my brain. The splashing of water had we whipping around, in search of Maric. I watched as he pulled a girl out of the water, her face was pale with death and her lips were purple from the cold water. She smelled of rogue.

"Is she alive?" I asked nervously, hoping she wasn't but something deep inside of me wanted her to be. Maric gently laid her down on the hard rock and placed two fingers to her throat, checking her pulse. I watched from beside him, lightly pushing brown hair from her face.

"She doesn't have a pulse." His voice was soft, nervous. Unlike me, Maric was much more innocent with death. He hadn't seen much of it in his life, for which he was lucky. "We need to do something, she looks like she's only 17."

"Maric." I said in defeat, knowing there was nothing we could do. His head whipped to face me, his blue eyes filled with unshed tears. "Maric, there's nothing we can do."

His eyes slowly moved back to the girl and before I could do anything his claws were already extended. He gave me a stern, determined look, and plunged his claw into her lung.

Water erupted from her lips, and dripped onto the cave floor, her eyes flew open and violent coughs echoed off the stone walls. I stared in amazement at Maric.

"How did you-?"

"Alisha taught me, she want's to be the Pack Doctor someday." Maric's mate, Alisha, is a very strange woman but she's very smart.

The girl's blue eyes had closed once again, but her chest would rise and fall when she breathed signaling that she was still alive.

"Let's take her home." Maric suggested. "She could be seriously hurt."

I pondered his idea for a moment, and then my wolf butt his big ass into my head.

She's a rogue Noric. Remember that.

I sighed, ignoring my wolf's warning, and nodded to Maric. I cautiously walked towards the girl and scooped her frail body into my arms.

"Let's go."

My eyes slowly opened to a blinding light. Everything was white and the distinct smell of disinfectants reached my nose. I crinkled my nose and closed my eyes again, welcoming the darkness behind my eyelids.

"She's awake." A light, womanly voice stated from beside me. The quiet padding of feet on linoleum told me she was walking to stand on the left side of the bed. "Clause, sweetie, she's awake."

Butterflies flew through my stomach when I heard his name. Who is this Clause? I don't remember knowing anyone with that name.

"She is?" A tired, husky voice mumbled from my left, very close to my ear. A cold hand was placed on my cheek and then my forehead.

"Sweetheart can you open your eyes please?" The womanly voice asked gently, her thin fingers moving hair out of my face. Obeying her commands, my eyes slowly peeled open to reveal a slightly darker room than before. The ceiling was white and bumpy, dust and cobweb free. My eyes traveled over to a young lady, maybe 25, with fiery red hair and soft blue eyes, her hand left my face and she looked over to something next to me. My tired eyes followed hers and soon landed on a god.

His head of silky black hair was laying on his muscular arms, seemingly still asleep. The woman placed a hand in his hair, waking him up. He brought his hands above his head and stretched, his eyes still closed.

Finally his eyes opened, they were the most beautiful color of blue I had ever seen, like the oceans and the sky combined in his eyes. His face was beautiful, every line was angular and sharp, practically touched by angels. Those ocean eyes landed on the woman first and she motioned to me with a swift motion of her hand. His eyes slowly moved to mine, almost cautiously.

They met mine and the world stopped.
