"Holy shit." I breathed running a hand through my hair my legs started shaking and I wasn't sure what the hell he was doing here. Jackson immediately clammed up beside me seething. "Just say the word Tori and I'll tell him to go." Jack said through his teeth. I wanted that very much but at the same time I needed to confront him, I needed to hear his voice. "Will you just stay in the car? If I need you I will bang on the trunk or something." He sighed leaning forward in his seat nodding despite his reluctance.
I slowly opened the car door still trembling, heart stopped completely. Rayner was soaking wet his eyes held a hard emotion that I couldn't place and I was afraid he'd come to yell at me for sleeping with Jackson. How could he possibly know about that though? He hadn't even called since New Years.
Neither of us said anything at first I just stood by the trunk of my car and he hadn't closed the five foot gap between us. I avoided his face while he continued to stare until I couldn't take the silence another second. "Why are you all wet? You must be freezing." I couldn't imagine being wet in low fifty degree weather. "I got caught in some sprinklers." He shrugged as if that were a normal thing that happened. "And you didn't think to get out of the water?" I wondered aloud. He shook his head laughing humorlessly, "I was distracted." I wanted him to just spit out what he needed to say so I could calm down.
"Why are you here Rayner?" He scratched his chin still not saying anything which was so frustrating. He took two steps closer finally stepping into the lamp light so I saw his face that was scattered in bruises again. I gasp audibly covering my mouth with my hand. "What's going on? Why are you bruised? Why are you on TV holding hands and kissing Eliza? Why haven't you called me?" I spouted out the questions as quickly as they came to my head. He cleared his throat staring at the ground. "I have to go." He responded not answering a single question. "I'm sorry I came here Tori. I just wanted to see you." He turned away stalking off in the direction of his car.
"Rayner!" I called after him more confused than I had been. He got in his car but didn't start it, I took this as my chance running across the parking lot getting into his car so he'd be forced to talk to me. He didn't seem surprised that I was here with him. In fact he actually relaxed taking a sigh of relief. "What the hell is going on Rayner?" I whispered because it was too quiet. He said nothing at first only took one of my hands between his as if he were studying it.
"I've known I'd have to break things off with you since I took the job with Eliza you know? That's why I wanted you to move in with me so I could see you in secret." My stomach dipped learning this new found information. "I am pretending to be Eliza's boyfriend in order to protect and collect intel. That was the mission from the start. She has more than a stalker and the guy at the Christmas event was just one of the crazy lunatics. There are bad men out there that want her dead because of a business deal that went wrong. She got herself in some sketchy shit in order to be who she is today. I'm not getting into it because I am not even suppose to tell you what I just told you. I should've just let you be but I couldn't because I am selfish and I love you." He squeezed my hand bringing it to his lips. "I can't be seen with you right now though. Once I am finished with this case I am out though. I can't do this again. I can't lose you. I'd rather be a traffic cop than take another assignment like this." My heart ached for him but I was overcome with incredible guilt because I'd done something unforgivable. Tears were dangerously close to spilling my eyes. "Don't be sad Tori. I wouldn't ever leave you and if you'll still have me after this I'd like to try again." I couldn't look at him. "What is it?" There was an urgency in his voice that I couldn't ignore.
"I definitely want you Rayner, but I've done something and you won't want me after I tell you." A single tear fell from my eye admitting to him I'd betrayed him. He held my hand tighter placing my palm up against his chest. I felt his heart beating against his rib cage. "I don't care. There's nothing you could do that could make me not want you Tori." His eyes were soft and sweet and I didn't deserve it. I was having a hard time spilling the beans.
"Even sleeping with Jackson?" I breathed out feeling the air become thicker. He traced circles in my hand silently. "How many times?" His voice was barely over a whisper, his face contorted in a wince. "Once." I told him honestly. He nodded his head processing all the information. "It doesn't change the way I feel about you Tori. It complicates things but I still feel the same. It was my fault anyway. We can talk about it another day." He leaned forward putting his face in the crook of my neck. "I miss you so much. Soon." His lips pressed against my skin feeling like a thousand needle pricks. "Go now." I nodded giving him a tight smile making my way back to my car but Jackson had already gone inside. I sighed knowing he was upset with me.
Kato greeted me at the door but Jackson was tucked away in his room somewhere. I decided to take Kato on a walk to clear my head before having another dramatic conversation with Jackson. I knew I was hurting him and that was the worst part in all of this. I loved Jackson, just not in the way he wanted me to.
