Ethereal - Chapter One - Wandering Souls

I take one small step. I take another, and another. I pick up my pace, quickly turning around the corner. The darkness, following behind. I stop and breathe, looking back, all I see is fog, spreading throughout the blackness of the Earth.

I glance around, this time looking ahead, there I see, a female. Her green eyes, peering directly into mine. I blink once, she smiles. I blink again, she's gone. I scan around my surroundings again, but I cannot see. The city has become too dark, everything around me blending in.

I go to walk, but my legs won't carry me. It's as if I'm strapped to something. As if something is forcing me to stay in place. The force is as strong as gravity itself.

I begin to scream, in hopes that girl will come back and help me, or to at least tell me what's going on, and ways for me to save myself.

Just right when I yell "Hello!", I feel a shock.

---

My eyes open wide, without delay. My body jolts right up, and I'm left breathless. I glance over at my nightstand, and pull my phone off of the charger.

The time read 4:02 am. I shifted my body over, and let my soft, pale legs dangle on the side of my bed. I stood up slowly, my body feeling weak.

Why am I awake again? Oh right, I had a dream, but for some reason I can't seem to remember a single detail of what had happened.

This is my fourth time waking up so early in the morning, and not even having a clue of what I had dreamt about.

My body quivered, as the feeling of a light draft hit my spine.

I placed my light pink jacket on myself. I slipped on my combat boots and headed out my front door.

Petrichor was the first thing that my body realized. The air was humid, absorbing all of the wetness from the land, just how my body absorbed the gentle breeze gliding against me.

Here I am, wandering on, letting my eyes roam around the dark, sleeping city.

I can't help but to think of dreams everyone else might be having. As I began realizing and noting what I see, I began noticing that some buildings had no lights on, signaling that most likely the people inside were sleeping, but maybe not, perhaps they aren't home, or perhaps they even lie wide awake, dreaming of being somewhere else, just as I always have.

Though, not every light was off. Some people had lights on, perhaps enjoying the start of a new day, or getting ready for work.

You see, I could assume for hours, my thoughts keep me awake. My mind doesn't seem to completely shut off. It works all day long, and doesn't stop for a single break. So here I am, at 4 something in the morning, letting the air of the end of June wake my tired self up even more.

I let my eyes glance wherever they please. All my body feels as of now is lassitude and mist, as the win begins to pick up left over rain drops. I begin walking past an apartment building. One that isn't too extreme, or too fancy. Not one that looks as thought it costs a fortune, but not one that looks unstable, or too inexpensive either.

The building structured and made up of dark brown bricks, stacked up onto one another like a statue made up of legos. I consider myself to be very observant. My eyes pick up on small details.

I continued on, winding and winding around the never-ending streets, the streets that seemed to pull you in with all of it's breathtaking views.
