STAGE 8: Big Time Rush
James wasn’t usually an early riser, but he found himself wide awake and refreshed at eight in the morning, leisurely walking around the PalmWoods park on his own. He took in the scent of the early morning breeze and smiled. It felt great to wake up to the warmth of the sun and the beautiful scenery of green grass and leafy trees. He had to constantly remind himself that all this wasn’t a dream; that he wasn’t just ‘the face’ in Minnesota anymore, that he was really here in Los Angeles, working with a producer and a band to be famous.
Although the beginning of their first day of training had been rather disastrous, later in the evening, when the boys had rushed back to Rocque Records and apologized to Gustavo, things had went by smoothly after that. They kept their questions limited and did as they were told without protest. As a result of that, their dance lesson was a success, and even Logan managed to catch up on their routine. They were also given a better look after rummaging through numerous racks of different clothes, and the stylists had done a great job in “turning them more into a boyband than dogs”, as Gustavo had said. Their singing rehearsal had gone well too, and determined to prove themselves worthy, they had made sure that their voices synchronized with one another’s as a band just as Gustavo wanted them to. He seemed pleased, and they knew they were finally working together.
The only thing missing now was their song. They had trained all night, and although they were exhausted by the time they returned to their apartment, they had all agreed to start working on their new song first thing in the morning. Which was why James was awake right then, his mind fresh and ready to generate creative ideas for the song despite his entire body still longing for sleep.
He found an empty table at one secluded spot in the park, where there weren't a lot of people walking around, and gratefully sat there. He placed the notebook and pencil he'd been carrying with him on the table and leaned back. He let out a sigh as he stared up at the clear blue skies above him, with puffy white clouds occasionally obscuring the sun and revealing it again after a while. It was a perfect day to sit back and relax... if only he didn't have a job to do.
He softly groaned and sat up again, opening his book and turning to an empty page. He swept his gaze around him, looking for an inspiration or a spark to give him a good start. He wasn't entirely sure what the song was going to be about, but all Kendall had said last night was "we'll write a song that describes about how we'll give it our best shot to make use of the amazing opportunity in front of us." It wasn't very helpful, in James's opinion, but it was better than nothing at all. He placed an elbow on the table, rested his cheek on his upright hand, and began to think.
Wrapping his mind around the word "opportunity" eventually led to his old school back in Minnesota, on the very day Gustavo Rocque held the audition in search for a talented boyband. He remembered how he had convinced Kendall about how important it was that he auditioned for the project, how he had managed to get Carlos and Logan's help in pranking their way into the hall. Such were the things he had done in order to not let the chance slip by, and now here he was.
The thought suddenly brought him to when they sat at the pool last night, and Kendall's words rang in his mind like a bell. "Dump the fight, or big time rush?"
That was probably the reason why he was here right then, because even when things seemed dark and impossible, he would never in his life 'dump the fight'. And so he grabbed the pencil and quickly wrote it down.
Hey, hey
Listen to your heart now.
Hey, hey
Don't you feel the rush?
Hey, hey
Better take your shot now.
