Ghost heart

I had to get creative with my transportation, it was too far to walk, I didn't know how to drive and I couldn't ride my bike for obvious reasons. There weren't any nearby bus stops, and the nearest train station was 10 miles away. I pasted back-and-forth trying to concentrate on the cottage to at least have an idea as to where is was.

Then all of a sudden I was right outside of the cottage. I took several steps back because of the shock. "That's it! I'm losing it!" I thought in my head. I mean, how could I have gotten here? It's not like I transported here right? That's impossible! Only super humans and ghosts could do that! I thought I wasn't dead, but. Maybe I really am dead and I have just been in denial all this time. But I couldn't think about that now, right now I need to find Lisa. I walked towards the cottage and opened the door. It was empty. Completely abandon. "You see?! It was just a dream!" I told myself out loud. But after a sigh of relief my heart sank, that also means I have no idea where Lisa is. I sat down on the floor of the cottage and forced myself to take a nap.

I was still in the cottage but it looked different. I looked around and realized that I was dreaming again. I looked at the corner of the room and saw those icy blue eyes, I tried to take a step closer, and surprisingly succeeded. I continued to walk closer to him but right when I reached him he disappeared. I turned around and saw him in the other corner, so I walked toward him again. And once again, just when I reached him he disappeared and reappeared in another corner. After doing this a few times I got tired of it and shouted, "STOP RUNNING AND SHOW YOURSELF ALREADY!" I turned around and he was right behind me.

"Be careful what you wish for young one."

Shadows swallowed us whole. "You might just get it."

I woke up. I was freezing cold for a few seconds, but then I felt nothing. I repeat, nothing. No emotions, no pain, no nothing. I just sat there, staring at nothing. I didn't care about anything or anyone, I felt nothing.
After a while of sitting there I decided to go home, I blinked and I was outside of my house. I walked right in, not bothering to open the door, and sat on the couch. I blinked again to turn on the TV and to change the channels. Once I found a good one I would watch it for a while before changing it again. I did this for the next few weeks, and in those weeks I seemed to get younger. By the end of the month I was back to being 5 years old.

Then one day the phone rang and I let go to voice mail. Then I heard Lisa's parent's voice.
"Lisa honey? We just called to say, happy birthday! Love you and call us soon!" I blinked and was in front of the phone, then my life flashed in front of my eyes. But not my whole life, just the parts with Lisa.

I then transported to the cottage and when I stepped in it looked like how it did in my dreams. I turned my head to my right and I saw her, I saw Lisa! I ran to her to free her but right when I reached her He appeared. His face was covered in shadows so all I could see was his icy blue eyes.

"You may have overcome my trance, but it is too late. You can never become human again now."

"What do you mean?! I thought I was dead!" My voice was high pitched, I'd forgotten that I was back to being 5 years old. "What's going on?! Why am I like this?!"

"You are like this because of me, you acted like a brat, so I punished you. The only way you could've returned to being human was if you changed your ways. You almost did it to! But you consumed yourself with finding your killer you neglected your friend." He raised his hand and gestured towards Lisa, she was shaking.
"What did you do to her?"

"Nothing. You did this to her." He pointed his finger at me, "You neglected her and because of you she is like this." What little remained of my heart throbbed. I was turning more and more into a ghost, most of my human features were gone. All that was left was a little piece of my heart, and it hurt. It hurt because it was then that I discovered how little attention I was giving to my friend. When she got into the university she dreamed of going to I didn't congratulate her, instead I got mad at her for wanting to leave the state and she ended up declining the offer because of me. When she would get back from school I would never ask how her day was, just continue with my work. When her parents and brother moved to New York I made her stay here with me. She gave up everything for me and this is how I repay her?! How could I be such a horrible friend?! How could I be so selfish?! She is the only person left in my life and now she is about to die because of me. I need to save her, I have to!
"How can I save her?!" I shouted at the icy eyes.

"You can't." He replied bluntly. "She is going to die and there is nothing you can do about it." He smiled, "You're too late." He began to chuckle, "I can't believe it's taking you this long to figure it out!" His chuckle turns into a roaring laugh.

"What do you mean?" I begin to cry.

"I can't tell you! You need to figure it out!" He stops laughing, "What a shame, I was really rooting for you." He frowns. "Oh well, I guess you failed like the rest." He started to walk away deeper into the shadows. The moment he was far enough away from Lisa I ran to her side.

"Oh, you didn't have to wait for me to step aside, it's too late for you to do anything to save her now." He continued walking.

"I'm sorry Lisa! I'm so sorry I ignored you! Just don't die!" My tears started to come faster, before they stopped all together. Now all I really had left was my little throbbing heart. Then, right before that was gone too, I pulled it out of my ghost body and pushed it into Lisa's. Light emerged from the spot and illuminated the cottage, I glanced over to where the man was standing, and no shadows could hide him now. I turned back to Lisa's body and saw that she was starting to wake up. Once she saw me she gave me a big hug, and in that moment I began to age. I was growing and I didn't stop till I was at my normal age of 21, my eyes were full and bright, and I could feel my heart beating in my chest. Could it be? Am I alive?

Once she let go we turned to the shadow man. He was a little annoyed by the light but overall he seemed happy, but not a good happy, more like a twisted happy. He began to slowly clap his hands.

"Congratulations! You have passed my test," He looked at me.

"What test?"

"This one of course! You had me worried there for a moment, you really made me think that you would fail like all the others."

"This was all a game for you?!" Lisa shouted to him.

"No, it was a serious matter." He dusted off his shirt, "But you don't need to worry about that yet, right now you can celebrate your victory. After all, you were the only one that passed." Before we could ask anything else he disappeared into the tiny shadows that remained in the cottage. But we didn't care, he was tomorrow's problem, today we celebrate!

And we did, after some time we got back into the swing of things. I, now being human and fully alive, went back to school and Lisa went to New York for a while to see her family. Everything was perfect, that is until one night.
