A girl with black hair and a big suitcase walked in.
“Hi!” Brooke said excitedly, “I’m Brooke!” This girl had an endless supply of energy.
“Hi. I’m Arielle,” I said. The girl looked at us but didn’t smile.
“Danielle,” she muttered.
“I know we’re all going to be great friends!” Brook squealed. Danielle looked at us and we both smiled at her but she still didn’t smile back. Instead she did a quick sweep of the apartment and asked her which one was her room. After we told her, she went to her room and closed the door behind her.
“Well, then,” Brooke said turning back to me, “She seems nice.” We both laughed. For an hour, we talked and laughed and tried to get to know each other as best as we could.
I found out that she was from Sudbury and she came to live in Toronto by herself because she was starting at a new boarding school here.
“What school is it?” I asked her. She swallowed and looked away. She muttered something under her breath but I didn’t hear it.
“Sorry?” I asked. She looked at me, her expression serious.
“If I tell you, you’ll think I’m totally nuts,” she said and smiled resuming back to her normal self. I put my left hand up and said, “Scout’s honor.” She chuckled.
“Well, I keep seeing this, um, guy,” she started, not sounding comfortable talking about it.
“What do you mean?” I asked her.
“Like, a guy I’m not supposed to be seeing,” she continued.
“So you’re dating a guy you’re not supposed to?” I asked, not really getting it. She laughed.
“No nothing like that. He’s a guy that’s not supposed to be alive,” she stopped talking and waited for my reaction. I just stared at her.
“Like a ghost?” I finally said. Brooke nodded.
“Crazy, huh?” she said.
“Me, too,” I muttered. She looked at me.
“You too what?” she asked, confused.
“I keep seeing a woman,” I said softly. She stared at me wide eyed. We sat there just staring at each other. Then suddenly we both burst out laughing at how strange this all was.
“So what is this boarding school exactly?” I asked after we finally stopped laughing.
“I’m not sure exactly,” she admitted, “I saw this flyer for it blow towards me randomly one day and I felt, I don’t know, drawn to it I guess. This sounds so weird, I know,” She laughed nervously.
“Why are you here?” she asked me. I told her about my Mom, Travis and Bloody Mary – Elise Bradley.
“So your Dad kicked you out?” she asked, shocked.
