I went home trying to digest this new information. But I didn’t have very long.

“I found the perfect apartment for you,” Dad said on our back home. Disappointment filled me because I couldn’t help but feel a spark of hope that he would change his mind. I didn’t respond.

“It’s in a very convenient place, so you’ll have access to a lot of transportation. And you get to share it with two other girls who are in a similar situation as you,” Dad said enthusiastically. I looked at him closely. He portrayed excitement for me but when I looked in his eyes, I saw nothing but worry. I sighed.

“What if I don’t like? Can I come back?” I finally said.

“Promise me you’ll at least stay a couple of months,” Dad said.

“Fine,” I muttered, crossing my fingers behind my back.

“You’re what?!” Kristie exclaimed. She looked at me with complete and utter shock on her face.

“I said I’m moving,” I repeated slowly. She frowned.

“I heard what you said! I just don’t want you to go!” she said sadly. Kristie enveloped me in a big hug.

“When?” she whispered pulling back. She sounded like she was afraid of the answer.

“Tonight,” I said softly. She looked at me tears filling her eyes. Hell, now I was crying. We sat there for a few minutes.

“Promise me you’ll come back and visit,” she said.

“I promise. I’m only going for a couple of months to make my Dad happy, anyway,” I said. Hope filled her eyes. This was breaking my heart. Kristie has been my best friend since we were in diapers and there was nothing we didn’t do together or couldn’t say to each other. We called each other Twins because we had so much in common. How was I supposed to move now?

“Look what you’ve done, my mascara is running,” she said wiping under her eyes. We both laughed and hugged each other again.

“Call me every single day and make sure to report every hot guy there is,” Kristie said. We both laughed again and stood up from her porch stairs.

“Bye,” I said to my Twin.

“Bye” she said. We both waved and I walked down the next few steps and started the short walk back to my house.

On the way there I thought about Kristie’s and me’s closeness and friendship. I was so lost in thought that it took me a while to realize that I had a distinct feeling someone was following me. The hair on the back of my neck rose and I suddenly felt cold. I wrapped my arms around myself and continued walking, ignoring the feeling.

It was eerily quiet and suddenly a branch snapped somewhere behind me. I spun around but there was nothing there.

Stop being so damn paranoid, I scolded myself. But I still felt as though someone was watching me and the feeling never left until I got home.
