The next day I am woken by the annoying beeping of my alarm clock. Burying my head in my pillow I reach out my hand and try to blindly hit the snooze button. After a minute of fumbling around with my hand I just threw the clock against the wall and grumpily got up. I quickly got ready and headed down stairs.
In the kitchen my mom was making herself coffee. We have always had the same coffee maker ever since I was a little kid. The rumbling of the coffee maker could always be heard from whatever room you're in. Why we don't get a new one I will never understand why.
I greeted her and quickly grabbed some breakfast and went to pick up Charlie. I pulled up to his house and almost as soon as I pulled there he rushed out and got into the passenger seat.
"Hey Girl Hey!" he said like a stereotypical teenage girl mockingly.
"Hi..."
"I am so excited! Just think of all the new freshman boys."
"yay...."
"I know right!" He says not hearing my non excitement.
-------------------------------------(at school)-------------------------------------------
As I step out of the car all of the memories from last year come rushing back to me. Like at lunch when I slipped on food on the ground and spilled my food onto myself, or like when I went to prom with Charlie and his date, but I mostly just stood in the back drinking punch while watching Charlie slow dance with his date. But thank god it's my senior year, I only have to deal with one more year of high school and then I can get outta here.
Everyone is greeting their friends as Charlie and I walk through the hallways.
We walked to our lockers (which are conveniently just across the hall from each other) then quickly got to our classes by weaving past the crowds of people in the hallways.
Over the weeks the "beginning of the school year" feeling wears away and everything gets back to how it usually is; the teachers give out tons of homework and I sit in the back of each class with Charlie. With the new school year comes the new assholes to taunt Charlie for being gay.
Ever since the beginning of freshman year he's been teased by the popular kids. He doesn't show any pain or sadness from the taunting, but I've known him so long I can tell when he's upset.
Charlie and I are walking to our art class and one of the popular guys named Jack as he walks by and mutters that Charlie's a fag under his breath.
"Excuse me" says Charlie with his eyebrows raised.
"You're a faggot" he replies louder with a cocky smirk on his face
"C'mon let's just go Charlie, He's not worth it." I say quietly as I try to pull him down the hallway
"Fine." He replies through gritted teeth.
The late bell rings signaling that we only have only one minute to get to class, so Charlie and I quickly sprint to our art class leaving Jack in the hallway.
We barely made it to art class on time but somehow managed to. We slip into seats in the back right as the bell rang.
"Welcome class, I am Mrs. Hughes. Because Mr.Walter has recently retired I am your new art teacher."
She looked fairly young, about 25. She was very enthusiastic and obviously haven't been teaching that long. Her hair was tied into a tight bun and she was wearing clothes that were currently "in". She looks like the type of teachers who are like "I'm not your teacher, I am your friend. You can tell me anything". Then you get called to the principal's office or the guidance counselor because she spilled every little juicy detail of what you told her.
"We are going to do a individual year-long project. Each of us are going to make a representation of what is the most important to us. You can create it anyway you want to as long as it is original." She said except, I was paraphrasing it because what she actually said was really long and boring.
With that everyone started busily chatting about what they were going to do.Charlie excitedly chats about he's going to do a rainbow to show gay pride.I come up with a list of ideas but can't seem to choose.
Then the bell rang. Charlie and I weaves our ways through the halls to our next class which was German. Once at German class our teacher greeted us.
"Guten Tag deutsch klasse!" (Good day German class!)
"Guten Tag Frau Sass." (Good day Mrs.Sass)
"Zuerst werden wir unser Kapitel acht Test haben, danach muss ich euch allen über etwas reden."
(First we will have our chapter eight test, then I must speak to you all about something.)
She handed each of us our tests. I'm glad that I studied last night with Charlie because their are some people here who act like they don't even know what hallo means. (btw hello in German is hallo incase you haven't already guessed)
After we finished our tests Frau Sass collected them and made an announcement. But thankfully she said it in English. Their are times where she will speak directions in German and then everyone will get confused because when speaking German she speaks really fast.
"This year we are having German exchange student coming. They are coming here to help them learn English so keep that in mind if you talk to any of them. They will be staying with us for a year. We need more people who are willing to let them stay at their houses, so if you have space available please let me know."
After that everyone started excitedly chatting about what they think the German students will be like.
I feel someone poke me and turn to look at them.Charlie turns toward me and says "You should host one of the students!"
"Why?"
"Oh come on, you need a little excitement in your life."
"I'll think about it."
