“Not him?” Beck pointed at Cletus Houston, who was currently picking his long, beak shaped nose and wiping the boogers on his flannel shirt.
There was nothing wrong with Cletus, I guessed. Except that he was chronically gross and had a tendency to spit all the time and wear a cowboy hat to school. Okay, he was gross and not my type. But we’d been lying on the grass for almost the whole day and all the guys that had passed were ‘not my type’. I was quickly beginning to wonder if I even had a type.
“Come on Amber.” Beck frowned at me, watching as Cletus chewed a toothpick as he loaded pig feed into the back of his dad’s old red farm truck. “He’s perfect for you, how could you resist that face?”
I gave Beck a weird look. “Are you sure you’re not into him? Because you seem to like him more than I do. As a matter of fact, almost all the guys that have passed here today you liked.”
Beck shoved me in the shoulder. “That was random enthusiasm for you. I like girls, thanks very much. Speaking of girls,” he nodded his chin over at three girls who were fast approaching us.
I squinted into the sunlight, only to find that they were Jade, Kelsey and Selena. I hadn’t seen the girls since the neighborhood fair which was over two weeks ago. I’d bailed on them pretty rudely then, but with due cause because of Betsy and (her evil but weirdly beautiful henchman) Kaila. So my status of friendship with the girls was so unknown.
“Amber! Beck!” Selena waved, racing up the hill to us with Kelsey and Jade behind her.
Once again, the girls were dressed impeccably, not a strand of hair out of place. They also seemed a whole lot prettier too. How did they make tank tops and sandals look so nice? Once they reached us, they bestowed me with hugs and happy greetings and I was surprised to find that they weren’t upset with me. Once again, I was realizing that not all girls were like Betsy and her evil groupies.
“What are you guys up to?” Jade asked as they collapsed on the grass, stretching out their legs.
“Um—” I began. I really didn’t want to tell them that Beck was trying to find someone to make out with. That would be embarrassing.
“We’re trying to find Amber a boyfriend.” Beck said before I could even form the lie.
“Beck!” I hissed.
The girls laughed.
“That is so cute.” Jade admitted. “Any takers yet?”
Beck shook his head. “None. It turns out, Amber’s very picky and has a selective type.”
“Oh,” the girls said simultaneously.
“In that case,” Kelsey piped up. “You should come to Betsy’s party tonight. It’ll be a blast, and way hotter guys will be there.”
“Don’t forget, everyone’s home for summer, wink, wink,” Jade said enthusiastically, batting her lashes at me.
The girls giggled.
“B-B-Betsy?” was the only word that I had managed to cling to while she spoke.
No way. Nuh uh. Non. I was not going anywhere that had Betsy’s vile possession on it. That girl irked the hell out of me. And if it was her party, then I knew that it was somewhere where I was not welcome.
Selena rolled her eyes. “Betsy’s Mid Summer Bash. Where she invites all the guys from our school and flaunts her ginormous jugs for the entire night.”
