The police never did come by after the Miller boys witnessed Grace's ability.
Probably because no one would believe a twelve year old rambling about "a girl with a purple shield coming from her hands".

In the seven years since the incident, she had not told a soul, choosing to keep her promise to her mother.
She had also found a better way to use her powers, rather than get angry or scared. The forcefields, as she now called them, weren't as big as the first time, but were easier to conjure when she thought of her momma, or even of her pa.

"Momma, what are you doing?" She sighed when she entered the kitchen and spotted the older woman at the stove.

"Making tea." Rose hummed from her place by the kettle. "I know we aren't british but it's much more soothing than coffee." She stated, looking up at her daughter as she walked towards her to peck her on the cheek.

"Coffee isn't meant to sooth, it's for waking you up." Grace explained for what felt like the millionth time. "Probably why I drink it so much." She muttered to herself.

"How was w-" Her mother started, but was cut off by the high pitched whine the kettle was omitting. She quickly removed it from the stove and turned the heat off, before grabbing two mugs from the top cupboard.

As she poured the tea she began again, "How was work today honey?" By which time the tea was poured and Grace was grabbing the remains of the milk from the refrigerator.

"Good, I suppose. The kids are more accepting of me now that it's been a month." She chuckled thinking of her first day working with the seven year olds. To cut a long story short, craft glue is still banned.

Her mother smiled, "Well I'm glad it's going well. And I'm still sorry that you had to leave in the first place." She quietened as she dropped her head slightly.

Grace sighed again. "Momma it was my choice to start working full time." She reminded her mother as she threw the empty milk in the trash. "And besides, those kids needed a new teacher after Williams retired." The young girl admitted, "I was the best and only option on such short notice."

After a sip of her tea her mother started moving towards the front room to sit on the couch. "Have I told you how proud of you I am?" Rose smiled up at Grace, unsure of when her daughter had become so much taller than her. She was now all limbs, long and lanky, compared to her own small frame anyway.

Grace set her tea down on the small coffee table and sat next to it so she was facing her mom. "You tell me more often than I deserve momma." The left corner of her mouth lifted in a small smile, before picking up her tea and taking a slow sip.

As she set the cup back down there was a knock at the door. Rose went to stand but Grace stopped her, "Don't you move momma, enjoy your tea, I can get the door." So, smiling, she stood and walked the six paces to the door, unlatched it, and swung it open.

Standing on the threshold were two men, one taller than the other, and a neutral expression on his face, as if he had never been taught how to emote.

The shorter of the two had decent length, wavy, brown hair, and his face was adorned with a warm smile. His appearance was overall much more welcoming than his partner.

As she thought this, his smile seemed to get bigger, though she was sure that must have been her mind playing tricks on her.
