"Ugh," Zelda sighs as she wipes her mouth after being sick.
"Your highness," a young servant girl runs to her side. "Are you okay?"
"Yes, I must have been something I ate." Zelda stands up from where she was kneeling behind a bush.
"Should I call for a doctor?" The servant girl asks.
"No!" Zelda quickly blurts out harshly to the girl. "Umm, I'm sorry. No, I'm sure I'm fine. Thank you though," Zelda corrects herself.
I don't need a doctor to tell me what I already know.
The girl curtsies and runs back to where she was standing at the entrance to the gardens.
Zelda walks through the beautifully planted gardens around her and heads back into the castle. As she enters the door to the castle the captian of the guard, and her best friend stops her.
"Your highness, Lady Riju has arrived. She is waiting for you in the gallery."
"Thank you Link," she says with a nod. "You know you can drop the formality right?"
"Just for show," he replies with a wink and a smile.
Zelda nods back at him drifting into her own thoughts.
I should tell him...
No. I can't.
It would just make it worse.
He's going to find out eventually.
But it would ruin his life. And mine.
"Hey," he puts a hand on her shoulder dropping all the formality he showed just a moment ago. "Are you okay?"
"Yes," she lies. "Just thinking about the meeting I have to have now."
"What's it about?" He drops his hand from her shoulder.
"Some business about bandits in the Gerudo province," she sighs, telling the truth this time. Riju was worried about an attack on a traveler in those parts and asked to see Zelda at once.
"Ahh," he says quietly. An awkward silence hangs in the air for a moment. "Well, I guess I'll leave you to it." Link walks out of the castle towards the gardens.
Zelda walks into the gallery where she is greeted by Riju and her personal guard Buliara.
"Hello Zelda," Riju pulls her into a hug. "How are you friend?"
"I'm well thank you," Zelda replies softly.
Riju looks into her eyes for a long moment. "Buliara, wait outside please."
With that her guard steps outside so only the two of them are left in the gallery.
Riju motions for Zelda to sit on one of the many couches around the room.
"So what is this I hear about the bandits?" Zelda says as she takes a seat.
"Not so fast," Riju stops her as she joins Zelda on the couch. "What is wrong? I haven't seen you look this upset since Ganon was still around."
"Nothing."
"Cut it. I know something is up. We have been good friends for years now. Don't try to hide anything from me."
Zelda hesitates. "You can't speak a word of this to anyone."
"You know I won't."
Zelda sighs and puts her hand on her stomach.
Riju eyes widen. "No..."
"I haven't even told you yet!" Zelda sighs.
"It's not hard to tell what's going on. Have you told anyone else?"
"No one."
"Not even the father?" Riju questions.
"Absolutely not him." Zelda's eyes sadden just thinking about him.
Riju pauses. "Link?"
Zelda nods slowly.
"I thought you two were just friends?"
"We are! It was just one night when... Well we had just... Ugh, it should've never happened. We can't feel that way for each other. He has his job and I have mine. There is no room for anything else," Zelda speaks quietly as a tear falls from her eye.
"Hey," Riju pulls her into a hug. "We'll figure this out."
"How?" More tears fall.
Riju stays quiet for a moment, thinking. "We can have someone adopt it. We don't have to tell them who the parents are. I can say the parents died or something."
"No, I want the people looking after the baby to know who they are taking care of," Zelda wipes the tears from her eyes.
Riju nods. "I can send someone to look around Hyrule for someone who would be willing to adopt a young baby."
"What should I do about Link?" Zelda asks, her thoughts always drifting back to him.
"Send him away for a few months. On a mission or something. And then you can pretend to get sick for a while so no one has to see you."
Zelda nods, thinking about everything they just spoke of. It makes sense and seems like a plan that could actually work. "It will only be a few more months, so you better find someone quickly."
Riju stands up, "I'll get right on it." She hugs Zelda again. "It'll be okay..."
Zelda nods. "What about the bandits?"
"That'll have to wait," she smiles sweetly at Zelda. "I'll be back soon friend." With that, Riju turns to leave.
Zelda sighs and let's her head fall into her hands.
Link would be heart broken if he found out...
When he finds out...
No. I can't let him know about this. Not now, not ever. This baby will go live with some family and never know who it's true parents are.
"Bandits on your mind?"
Zelda doesn't have to look up to know it's him.
"Yeah," she sighs.
"That bad of a meeting, huh?" He asks sitting next to her.
"No, the meeting just didn't go how I thought it would."
Link nods.
"I just don't know what to do..." She learns her head on his shoulder.
"It's okay, you'll figure it out, you always do." He says as he slides an arm around her. "Let me know if there's anything I can do to help, alright?"
"Thanks Link," she whispers as she closes her eyes.
