Chapter Three: Dan

I wake up to the heat of Australia burning into my skin. Sweat is dripping all over me and my new bed and I am very ungrateful for moving down here. I wish I was back in Vermont with all of my friends. No. My step father just had to cheat on my mother. No. My mother had to drag me half way across the globe to a town of so far rude Australians. I pull up my One Step Up jeans and a Tshirt and hop in the car with an ego ready for my first day of school.

It was a 5 minute drive to school and I could not believe that I didn't see any kangaroos. I hop out of the car, and try to achieve my goal for the day: to find at least one friend. First period starts and I meet a guy named Lucas. He seems kinda cool. He reminds me a lot of Charlie back in Vermont. It turns out that we have like 1/2 the day together so I guess I'm going to have to get used to this Lucas guy.

The day goes on and I get a couple of cool friends. I go over to my last class of the day and I walk into a room filled with AFP (Australian federal police) officers. They say that they have to check everyone's blood for a classified test. I start to get really nervous because my family was not legal citizens at the time so maybe they are looking for us. They take everyone's blood and scan it with this scanner thing. I was about 4th of 5th in line and when they scanned my blood it made a beeping noise. I was actually a little bit happy that this happened at the time because I thought I was going home. They would move me and my mother back to the states and my mother would have to leave me with my father! But once I looked at the officers expression, I knew this was more than a little boy not being a citizen. He said that I had to come with him and we all headed outside the school, him looking stressed and me looking frightened out of my mind. Once we get outside more officers came and made this huge circle around me

"I'm sorry! My mother just wanted a better life for me and her! Away from my step father!" I said and they could tell that I was scared.

"Son, what are you talking about?" Once officer said and honestly he did sound confused.

"How me and my mother are here in Australia illegally. That is why you are here right?" Ok now I was confused. If it wasn't for me being here illegally then what did I do?

"That's not it, but we are going to have to remove you and your mother from Australia." The officer said this and another officer whispered something into his ear.

"What? You can tell me I will find out anyways right?" I said.

"It's just... If you ever see your mother again that is what will happen." After the officer said this he pulled out one of those old fashion tape recorders and hit the record button. "State your name." He said this with much more command then how he was talking to me earlier.

"Wait! Why won't I see my mother?!?! What is happening?! I want my parents here now!" The officer stopped the tape recorder and seemed very pissed off.

"WHEN I TURN ON THE RECORDER YOU SHUT YOUR BIG MOUTH AND ONLY OPEN IT TO ANSWER THE QUESTIONS I ASK!" He said this screaming and I could feel an anxiety attack coming.

"Please... Please don't scream." I then went into my own world. A world of memories of my biological father. I remember once I came home from my first day of kindergarten. "Daddy! Look at this painting I made for you!" I still remember the painting, it was a fish. I went into my fathers office to find him stressed about work. "Daddy, are you ok?" My father stood up. He looked angry. "Maybe I should talk to you another time daddy." He came over to me.

"Your a little son of a bitch you know?" My father said this with much anger. Anger was all in him. All the time. I don't know why I even tried interacting with him.

"I'm sorry daddy..." But before I could finish he slapped me across the face.

"STOP BEING SUCH A SON OF A BITCH!" He then beat me. And it was bad. My mother was scared and so was I. I zone back into the real world where the officers are trying to get me to respond.

"Son... Son... Are you ok? I'm going to need a response." The officers have call down and helps.

"Hun?" I say coming out of my memory flash.

"Ok kid, I can tell that you are going into a state of shock. I'm going to need you to stay awake for a couple of more minutes and then you can go into shock all you want ok?" The officer is now concerned. I didn't know that someone could have a heart that reminded me of my father.

"Yeah... Ok." I say this still in a bit of a daze. The officer pulls out the recorder again.

"State your name." He says with that same commanding voice as the first time. I answer Dan Cox. "Date of birth." Still the same commanding voice but it's getting scarier by the minute. I answer December 20th. They ask me a couple of more very personal questions that make me very uncomfortable. But the last thing he says is the thing that sticks with me. The moment I will never forget. "Son... Are you aware that you are an alien?" And then they stabbed me in the back with a shot and I knock out.
