Chapter Four: Sam
"SAMANTHA LEE ANN WORTHMAN YOU GET YOUR BUTT DOWNSTAIRS NOW!" This is what I wake up to most mornings. My mother screaming at me. It is usually either I left my dirty cleats in the middle of the floor and my fathers wheelchair is stuck again thanks to me or something having to do with me and my soccer getting in the way of my fathers health. Ever since my dad got in a car accident two years ago all attention is aimed at my father who lost his leg. My family didn't care when I was named the national champion at soccer for my age group. My family didn't care when I got voted class president. My family didn't care when I came home multiple times with a black eye because the bullying has gotten worse. THEY. DON'T. CARE. It isn't like I don't feel bad for my dad. Of course I do, who do you think I am, Hitter? But sometimes I wish they could pay attention to me. I hobble down the stairs in a soccer shirt and trying to pull up my gym shorts when I see my mother who's face is as red as a tomato. "Sam, the smart TV is stuck again and your father wants to watch the Dolphins game from last night. Can you cue it up for him?" That's it? She had to yell at me because the TV was frozen?
"Sure mom but next time could you ask Alex? He is right there and he knows how to work the TV." Alex is my younger brother and everyone in our family has to treat him like a king in order for us not to have temper tantrums hourly.
"Sam you know how it is with him." My mother is always on his side and it really does get me mad sometimes.
"Fine." I grump off to the TV and help my father cue up the game. I then grab an Ego and do some drills out in the yard before I head off to school. You might think that I am crazy for getting all sweaty right before school but whatever. Drills release stress for me and I need to release stress every second that I can or I will burst. My brother comes out in a One Step Up T-shirt and I am about to punch him in the face. "Where did you get that shirt? One Step Up is seriously inappropriate!" I can't stand the One Step Up girls at my school (that is basically every girl) they think they are all that just because their jeans have a hole in places that virgins certainly would not show off to people.
"But Sam, I want to wear this. All the guys at my school are wearing One Step Up. It makes you look cool. I think you need a lesson in cool by the way." Now I'm mad. Could he just be a supporting brother for once in his life?
"You know what Alex? At least I am not a cry baby." That is the one thing that Alex hates about himself. He wants to be cool but inside he is just a little cry baby. My mother told me never to call him that because it will just start a temper tantrum but these days I think he needs a bit of tough love. Alex runs inside because he doesn't want to cry in front of me and prove my point. I do a couple more rounds of drills and I hear a honk outside. My mom comes out to our backyard where I am and tells me that Kate is here so I grab my backpack and run outside to hop into Kate's truck. "Guess what happened this morning?" I say sarcastically because I know she is going to guess it in less then a second. Kate pulls out of my driveway and starts driving to school.
"You did not call Alex a cry baby again did you?" Kate responds.
"Hell yeah! Why do you sound so concerned?" I say back.
"Because we have that wicked party at Josh's house tomorrow night and your parents are totally going to ground you!" According to Kate, Josh is my soul mate. I like him but I don't know about soul mate.
"Oh my gosh I completely forgot about that! Like anyone would want me there anyways. Besides, I heard that Kylie is going and it will just be another Kylie and Josh make out session. Not so fun." Remember when I said that I got a black eye earlier and my bitch parents didn't care? Yeah that was by Kylie. Ever since second grade she has hated me and one day apparently I was being too much of myself so she just punched me in the face. But since I am a lot stronger then her I beat the living shit out of her. Unfortunately that resulted for me getting suspended. Whatever.
"Dude! I don't know why they are even dating they are like not even alike!" I know Kate just said that not to hurt my feelings. I know they are the cutest couple in school and I don't want to be the one to break that up so I am just going to keep my thoughts to myself. And to Kate.
"Oh my gosh why does Canada have to be so cold?" I say this trying to change the subject, honestly I could care less about the weather.
"I know right! These days it is just getting out of control." Kate and I talk a bit longer before we end up at school. Kate is a senior and I am a sophomore so we go our separate paths and I will meet up with her later in the day.
I go on over to my first period to find a CPA (Canadian Police Assosiation) agent in there. "Um... What is going on Mr. Chase?"
"Sam. This is one of my students. Why don't you start with her?" Mr. Chase says to the CPA agent, completely ignoring my question.
"Alright so we are going to stick a needle in your arm, it's just to test your blood for something. You should be fine." The officer seems like he is trying to stay calm, but he is really nervous. He sticks the needle in and scans the blood and it makes a beeping noise. "Um... Kid? You are going to have to come with me." Now I am nervous. What just happened? What was the test for? I almost start crying (which you will never see me cry in a million years) because a possibility was it was a test for steroids.
It was about 3 years ago and I was at my private lessons for soccer. Of course my parents didn't care enough to come so I had to go on my own. After doing some warm ups and a couple of drills the coach said "Sam, I want to show you something." So he pulled me off to the side where no one else could hear us. "It isn't safe to tell you here, the only safe place to do this is the bathroom." Me being the little innocent girl that I was 3 years ago said ok and we went inside the guys bathroom. "These are called steroids. You take them to be better. Would you like to try some?" At first I said no thanks because my parents told me about steroids and how dangerous they were. Even when it got more and more tempting to take them, I still said no. Then my coach said something that will never make me think of him the same again. "Listen kid here is the deal, either you take these or something will happen and your life will never be the same again. It is your choice."
"What is the other thing?" I said way too curiously.
"Ok let me show you." He pulled his pants down. "This is the other thing. And I will make you suck on it until the day that you die. Ok?" I seriously did not want to do that, so I took the steroids. I feel guilty about it to this day. I made my parents find me a different team after that. I said it was because I didn't like the teammates and it was too far of a drive for not very good results, so we did. I am happy as ever on this team now but I am afraid that I will never be able to play soccer nationally because of that.
The officer pulled me out to the back of the school where other officers circled around me. Yeah this is totally because of the steroids. All that I can think now is crap. Crap crap crap crap crap. I am screwed. This is going to be the end of me and soccer. The officer pulls out one of those old fashion tape recorders and I start to shake.
"State your name." The officer barks at me.
"Samantha Worthman." I bark back at him and his expression is shocked. I bet he never knew a girl could be this tough.
"Date of birth." The officer says louder. If he is making this into a competition I will be the one to win.
"September 4th" I bark back even louder. He asks me a couple of more personal questions and by the time it is over both of our throats are sore. He puts away the tape recorder and asks me one final question.
"Are you aware that you are an alien?" He says to me.
"WHAT?" I scream back but before I can get any more information he injects another shot into me and I pass out.
