She sat on the floor trying to ignore the looks of the other children; they looked at her as though she was such an oddity and she was for many reasons. Her eyes followed a boy of eleven as he walked across the room towards her; he blended in with the other children so well it was hard to picture them as twins. She smiled as he sat next to her he was part of the reason she was an oddity, twins didn't happen that often in the program and girls never did in the fighters program.
Their mother had been one of the people to come through one of the first rifts. The scientists had hoped to create a fighter that would inherit something they could use; they never expected what they got. She looked at her twin, aside from their slightly pointed ears they looked nothing alike. He had light blond hair with piercing pale blue eyes and like most of the children from the program had pale skin; whereas she had dark black hair with natural tints of blue, her skin was lightly tanned from the days she snuck outside of the compound her purple eyes made her stand out even more then their pointed ears.
He smiled at her and held up his left arm it was lightly wrapped, from elbow and across all his fingers. "It comes off today." He flexed his fingers the bandages shifting around each finger. "Gunna see what I can do with it enhanced." The evidence of his rift blood had shown at an early age he could, at time, summon sparks of fire to his fingers. The scientists had hoped by enhancing his arm that it would make the fire last longer and become stronger. He lowered his voice and moved closer to his sister. "Why not show them what you can do? Then perhaps they would allow you to join in the classes instead of just watching."
She shook her head and looked out at the other children as they spared testing their abilities against each other. "Zuka, do you remember our mother." It wasn't a question really she knew he did, unlike the other children they had been allowed to stay with their mother for two full years. "The tests they ran on her." She stopped and leaned lightly against him. "The testing is what killed her no matter what they say."
Zuka shook his head. "She killed herself you know that, we were there." He looked at her wondering where she was leading to. "Zandra, what is the point. None of the others have their parents; very few even know who they were breed by." He stretched and stood looking down at her, it was almost time for class and he was eager to see what he could do.
She stood up and glared at him. "We are not like any of the others, me even less so." She moved closer to him ignoring the other children that had looked over. "I will not be made into a test subject like our mother was, and would be if they found out." She stopped and blinked when he shook his head. "I am not one of them and I never will be." She turned and began walking away. "Go to class become one of them if you want but from now on you do it without me."
Zuka walked into the bunkroom he shared with his sister and four other boys, walking over to Zandra's bunk he pulled down the curtains. "Are you happy now? I couldn't keep my mind on my task and was beaten by a fifth ranker!" He paused and looked down at the bed two packs lying by the pillow. "What's with the packs are you going somewhere?" He sat on the bunk next to her his anger draining away.
Zandra looked at him and sighed, pushing some more things into one of the packs. "I can't stay here any longer; I can feel myself draining away. I wasn't meant to be here. I can feel it." She forced herself to smile as she looked at him. "Come with me!" He was the only family she had left and now she was planning to leave it all behind.
He shook his head and looked away not wanting to meet her gaze. "I can't. My place is here, you know that." He smiled and tried to look at her. "Besides you'll be back, you always come back."
She forced herself to smile at him, shaking her head she stood. "Not this time Zuka." Shouldering one pack she picked up the other and stood looking at him. "We both knew this was coming, we may be twins but we were meant to be on opposite sides." Sighing she turned from him and began to walk away, leaving him sitting on the bunk.
