Chapter One
I stare at myself in the mirror. Blue jeans, grey pull-over-sweater and converse. My ordinary look. I plan on wearing this my first day at Nevada State University. I walk out the room past a few unpacked boxes and see my sister, Sam, scurrying around making sure she has all her books. She's excited and will definitely make a first impression with her formal skirt, white collard shirt and shiny black pumps. Yet she wanders why all the guys want her, i think to myself.
Finally, she settles down. I look at her, self-conscious and i can tell she knows what i'm thinking. "Stace, you look perfectly fine", she assures me. I sigh. But look at her. She's so professional, and i look like a 10th grader about to walk into a teen club.
"Sam, why do we have to leave so early? Class starts in another forty-five minutes." I never did understand her need to be so early. "I need to show you to your classes, of course", she says with excitement, which is the complete opposite of how i'm feeling. I am a nervous wreck.
"Trust me, my freshman year of college, it was a maze trying to get around", she adds. Well, at least i won't get lost.
I pick up my notebook and stand by the door. "Stacey, where are your books? All you're bringing is a single notebook?" Oh, so now you decide to notice. "It's the first day of class, what all do i need?"
"Oh, Stace, I've got a lot to teach you." Teach me? "I guess a notebook will be fine for today." That's the usual Samantha Jones. Always looking out for me. I don't want to complain, but doesn't she know i can do things on my own?
My stomach is in knots as there is only fifteen minutes until class starts. It takes me about ten minutes to walk to the Technology & Science building. Inside, it is large with a very wide seating area that looks like a millionaires living room. I would have never been able to afford this school if it weren't for my scholarship. I walk up the glass staircase and make a left just as Sam instructed. I find room 1034 at the very end of the fancy millionaire hallway.
The classroom looks nothing like what i'd imagined. The seating area looks like a movie theater with mini tables attached to each seat. The room isn't that big at all. At the front of the classroom there is a giant white board and a large screen hanging from the ceiling. Almost every seat is taken except for a few in the front row. I sit at very last seat on the first row and wipe my already sweaty hands on my pants.
I check my watch and see that there is five minutes until class starts. Nervously i scan the room again. Where in the world is the teacher?
"You look nervous." The deep voice comes out of nowhere, making me almost jump out of my seat causing my note book to fall off my table. Everyone glances at me, then continues to mind their own business after a few seconds. The man says while laughing, "did i scare you?" No shit!
I adjust myself in my seat. "Just a little bit," i say as he hands my notebook back to me. And for the longest time i stare at him, soaking in every detail like a sponge. Toned body, slim waist, short brunette hair, perfect white teeth, big blue eyes, soft tan skin with no flaws, dark blue jeans, white collard shirt with a blazer, and he's smiling at me. Dimples and all, knowing that he is...well...sexy.
"I'm Lucas", he says. It takes me a minute to realize we are shaking hands. I think quickly for a response. My name. What's my name?! My eyes gaze into his as I make a total fool out of myself. Once he realizes i have nothing to say, he finally says, "you must be Stacey." Quickly, i release my hand from his, shocked and confused by his knowledge. His smile widens, entertained by my reaction.
"Your sister, Samantha, told me you'd be here", he assures me, laughing. Oh, that makes more sense.
"Oh? You must be a friend of hers." Of course Sam knows this totally hot guy. "Yeah, something like that." I give an obvious look of confusion and he reassures me...once again. "We've worked together on a project." Oooooh.
My cheeks turn pink, embarrassed by what I thought he meant. "Sorry, I...I thought you meant something else."
"I see," he grins at me, aware of what i was thinking. "It wouldn't surprise me that she would attract you."
His eyebrow rises in curiosity. "How so?"
"She's very pretty. Boys drool at her sight." I look down at my notebook. I've always had low self esteem and Sam didn't make it any better.
"You don't think you are beautiful?" His question makes me look up and i give him an innocent blank stare.
Suddenly, i start to feel uncomfortable. When did this turn into a therapy session? "Can we not talk about this," i say as nicely as possible.
"I'm sorry. I just...," somehow i made him blush. For some reason i feel bad about it. "No, please. Don't be sorry. We can talk about it later-"
"After class," he cuts me off. "After class?" My heart begins beating faster. He waits for my approval... "Oh. Of course we can." I smile nervously at him and he smiles back, showing his perfect teeth.
"Well, i'd better leave you alone", he says finally. Then he gets up and walks off. He really is a good looking man. I can't imagine him ever liking me. I mean, there's not much to like. I'm awkward, bashful even. I glance at my watch, 9:45. Class should be starting now.
My eyes lay back on Lucas, who is now at the podium. Wait a minute...
"My name is Mr. Holloman...I will be your Professor for this course." The rest of his words are a blur as i am in disbelief and shock. Son of a bitch, he's the professor!
