The smell of bacon filled all of my senses as I snapped to attention in a bed that was not my own.
"What the heck?" I breathed as I frantically looked around the room. The walls were a dark blue and covered in mini posters of cars. The ceiling fan was on and a chill ran through me as I scampered out of the thick plaid comforter. The window that let in the light was opposite the wall with the door that I ran to.
I still had no idea where I was, so I simply followed the smell of bacon. Surely there should be a person there. All I had to do was take a simple walk down a short hallway to find the kitchen.
"So you've seriously never had a girlfriend?" I hear a familiar voice ask. "How does that even happen?" There are two people in the room and both have their backs to me. A boy with black hair is standing at the counter, presumably cooking the bacon. A girl with light brown hair is sitting at a small table looking at the boy. Wait a minute. That girl looks oddly familiar.
"Nope, never," the boy chuckled as he turned towards the girl and I. His eyes went wide as I felt my own do the same.
"Baron?" I asked. The girl jumped a little in her chair and also turned towards me. "Mayella?"
"I was wondering if you were ever going to wake up," Mayella said as she ran to greet me with a hug. She pulled away when I didn't respond and as if seeing the question in my eyes answered my inner thoughts. "Baron here was just being kind to let us spend the night. I figured it would be too much of a hassle to explain to our parents of why you were passed out, and his parents won't be home until later today. Plus he lives the closest to the school."
"So we brought you to my house and let you crash on my bed," Baron pitched in. "Didn't realize you'd be out this long but I'm making breakfast now and then we have to go to school."
My stomach growled loudly in response. I finally found my voice. "Bacon sounds good right now." Mayella laughed.
"That's the spirit!" A few minutes later Baron set a plate of eggs and bacon down on the table in front of me. I sat opposite Mayella and when Baron sat down, he sat next to her. Really close next to her.
"So what did I hear about not ever having a girlfriend?" I asked, trying to contain my smirk. Mayella smiled while looking down at the same time Baron blushed a red color.
"Umm... uh, I-I... I've n-never had one, no," Baron stuttered. "But I'm hoping to change that soon." He flicked his eyes towards Mayella and back. He did it so quickly that I don't think she noticed, though it doesn't seem like he would want her to. I just smiled.
"So where are you guys going on your date tonight?" I asked. I received similar responses as my last question.
"Date?" Mayella asked. "We're not going on a date tonight."
"Yes you are," I said matter-of-factly. "At least, you are now."
"Bealle, you are a sly devil," Baron said softly. "Why not? Mayella, would you like to go on a date with me tonight?"
Wow. That was straightforward. No blush. No studder. He just straight-up asked my best friend out. He asked my best friend out. My friend is going on a date. What? Mayella is actually going on a date! The best thing to happen to this town since-- Since the first incident. The incident. Does Baron even know about the book? Is he even aware of why our school is so freaking odd? We should tell him before the date, so he can be on the lookout. Yes. That sounds good. Let them go and have safe fun.
A little squeal bubbled up from inside Mayella. "Yes!" She told Baron, "I would love to go on a date with you tonight."
"Um... okay. That's great," said the shy side of Baron, which randomly made appearances. Baron and Mayella were about to go into fast-gibber-jabber mode to discuss the events to be taking place later this evening, but I needed to warn and inform him first. I couldn't bare them dying.
