Saturday, March 19th

There are only certain things that can wake me up, depending on when and what it is. Rain, or a thunderstorm on the outside of my house will usually not wake me up. This, however, was a new feeling.

Heat. Heat that radiated like fire hitting my every surface of skin, nearly burning it clean off. I sprung awake, something I wasn't used to doing. My eyes zoned in on Mayella sleeping on the floor in front of me. Something was casting an orange glow on her. Looking up, I screamed.

The roof was on fire. I shook Mayella with all I could. "We gotta go, Mayella!" She sat up squinting and I pulled her forward towards the front door. Thankfully, we weren't that far into her house. Standing up wasn't an option because there was too much smoke in the air, so we ended up crawling our way out. In her yard, we finally stood up and looked back to the burning house.

"That's my house," Mayella said as she started to wobble.

"We need to leave now," I told her. Staying would do no good to neither her nor me.

She started to go with me then stopped as a shriek came out of her mouth. "What about my fish? My cat? My parents!" With the last one, she took off running back to her house.

"Mayella, no!" I reached out to grab her, but missed by inches. She had almost reached the door when a loud creak could be heard. I caught up to her and yanked her arm backwards, just as the roof collapsed onto the rest of the house. We laid on the grass, scooted backwards as we watched the burning heap that used to be her house.

"Call the ambulance," she whispered. "Please." I reached for my phone, hurriedly clicking it on only to find that the battery was dead from lack of me charging it. I threw it to the ground and stood to my feet, pulling Mayella with me.

"Phone's dead, we need to get to town and use a phone there." We slowly made our way back to town and followed the streets looking everywhere for a payphone. None were to be found, and we were starting to loose hope of finding anything. Entering the small convince store I approached the man behind the counter.

"Hi, how may I help you?" He greeted politely in his usual manor.

"Is there a phone here we could use?" I asked, attempting a smile. Though I'm sure it came out more pained and less friendly than I would hope.

He looked concerned, but drug the phone across the counter and handed it to is anyways. "Here you go. Is everything okay?"

"No," Mayella answered honestly. "Hopefully it will be a little better soon however." Dialing 911, I put the phone up to my ear. Telling them Mayella's address that I happened to know by heart, I relayed the fact that there was a fire that caused the house to collapse. The lady responded by saying help was on the way. A thought sprung into my head, and I also told her of my parents and Baron, guessing at what address he might be. I hung up the phone with a sigh, saying a quick thank you to the man and leaving to find Mayella outside.

"How ya holding up?" I asked tentatively sitting down next to her on the curb.

"I should be asking you the same thing, you know. We both have been through a lot these past couple of days." I couldn't help but to silently agree with her. So much really had happened.

It almost felt like a big dream though. Well, nightmare would be a better word to describe it. Everything that was going wrong was occurring close together now, and it seemed unreal. How could this much bad really take place?

"I want to do something," she said, shaking me from my thoughts.

"And what's that?" I wasn't sure if she had something specific in mind or not.
