James had always cared about his hair way too much. Sure, he kept it messy but in his words "It's called rugged mum, the ladies love it." He spent way too much time on making sure his hair looked like he hadn't spent any time on it at all.
The day that he was due to board the Hogwarts express and head back to Hogwarts for another year his father appeared in his doorway while he was doing his hair
"James, I've got a pre-Hogwarts present from Uncle Ron," Harry declared.
"What is it," he asked without turning around. He was a bit surprised to get another present after his father had always given him the Invisibility Cloak.
"It's a comb," Harry replied. This caught James attention. He turned around. Harry tossed the comb at him and he caught it with ease. Harry left the room after this.
James ran the comb through his hair once. It looked the same as any comb but it felt fantastic and it swept through his hair with ease. He finished combing out all of his hair before wedging the comb in his pocket. He looked in the mirror at his now completely flat hair and ruffled it until he thought it was adequately messy.
James slipped out of his room and went to collect the last of his stuff.
"James have you gotten, oh," Ginny gasped. As soon as she laid eyes on James her mouth hung open.
"Yeah, I'm getting the rest. Mum what is it," James asked when he saw her expression. Ginny snapped her mouth shut and shook her head.
"It's nothing honey, I swear, just take a deep breath. Now it's nothing to worry about but your hair is just a bit-"
Before Ginny could even finish her sentence James sprinted to the nearest bathroom. He banged on the door twice. The door was opened just barely to reveal Lily standing there.
"I'm in here, woah what happened to your hair," Lily asked. James pushed pass her and into the bathroom. When he looked at himself in the mirror he was horrified to find that his hair was the brightest shade of pink.
"Pink, my hair is bloody pink. Pink!" Lily burst out in laughter.
"It's not that big of a deal James. You know how your uncle is with his practical jokes."
"Mom, this isn't just a joke, this is a travesty."
"James, don't be dramatic."
"I'm not being dramatic, there's no way I can go to school like this. I've got to take the Invisibility Cloak."
"That is not what your father gave it to you for."
"But mum (Y/N)'s gonna see it," James whined.
"Who is that?"
"No one," James said quickly.
"It's not "no one" it's the girl James likes," Lily blurted out.
"Lily shut up!"
"It's true mum, I heard him telling Fred and Teddy about it."
"Lily!" James lunged at Lily but he disappeared behind his mother's back.
"James you do know you can tell me about these types of things. And if you're starting to have feelings for girls than we should probably talk about-"
"Merlin, mum stop," he interrupted her. He moved past her and back to his room.
"Can we just go already," James whined.
"Yeah, Teddy went around to his Grandma's to get a few things he should be back soon."
The car ride there was full of awkward silence due to the recent argument Al and Harry had had and the sound of James complaining. When they finally reached the station James and Teddy rushed onto the train so that they could find a completely empty car.
"It really doesn't look that bad," Teddy noted.
"Stop lying."
"I'm not. Look if it makes you feel any better I'll make my hair pink as well." In the matter of seconds all of Teddy's hair slowly became pink starting at his roots.
When James say him he just sighed and said," It doesn't make me feel any better because you totally rock the dyed hair look and I look twice as bad if you have it as well." Just as slowly his hair was turquoise again.
"Here take this." Teddy tossed his beanie at James. James quickly shoved it on his head and covered as much as he could.
Suddenly, the car door burst open to reveal you standing in it.
"There you are James, I've been looking for you," you exclaimed. James shoved the beanie down farther.
"Well you've found me."
Teddy rose from his seat and squeezed past you. "I reckon I better find Victoire." Teddy shot a wink at James before disappearing down the corridor.
You sank into Teddy's seat and stared at James. He was ridiculously quiet which you thought was impossible for him.
"What's with the hat," you asked to break the silence.
He tried moving it down more. "Nothing, just something I was trying."
You made a grab for the hat and slipped it onto your head. That was when you noticed his hair. You paused for a moment.
"Your hair's pink," you said softly. He broke eye contact and looked at the floor.
"I think it looks great."
"Really," he said in a surprised tone.
"Yeah I reckon it looks fantastic." You switched seats so that you were sitting next to him.
"You weren't trying to hide it were you." You moved your hands through his hair. Slowly you stopped and leaned in to press a kiss to his cheek.
His cheeked turned a rosy shade of red. Your hand slipped into his.
"Besides, I reckon I look better in this hat then you." Both of you laughed but James stopped sooner. Every time he saw you laugh he couldn't help but think about how incredibly beautiful you were.
He moved towards you and pressed his lips to yours.
