Ch.1
Ill-fated
I walked out of my house at precisely five thirty every morning. Stopped to get coffee at the local brewery. And went to work. It was my normal routine
everyday. But today was different. It's almost as if god himself intended me to be late. The line for the brewery was out the door. And there was traffic because some smart ass wasn't paying attention.
When I finally arrived, I was ten minutes late. Maybe he wouldn't notice, I thought. Jared my boss was always busting on people when they are late or don't turn there work in on time. I swallowed, I have never been yelled at by Jared. When I got to my desk I heard a deep voice behind me.
"I'm disappointed Heather. Your late." his breath was warm on my neck. I turned around.
"I'm sorry their was traffic and ... the coffee shop...
"Save it Summers. I'm not in the mood to hear excuses." He then turned and walked away. I followed him. And grabbed his arm.
"It was only ten minutes. I highly doubt that you really needed me." I said as I put my hand on his chest. I looked up at him.
"I don't like it when your angry at me. It makes me feel that no matter how hard I try you won't except my work." I looked deep into his emerald eyes. He looked at me and bit his lip. He leaned in.
"Fine. Um, ok I will let it slip. Don't let it happen again. Ok?" I could see his face turing a shade of crimson as he walked away. I really hoped that nobody had seen that. I looked at the office and everyone else seemed preoccupied with their own work. Good.
People have always thought that Jared has a "thing" for me. And I guess that I just proved that. Jared was that typical boss. He had black hair and emerald eyes that could make any girl melt. Even me. I shook off the feeling and got to work. I worked till seven. Than I left like another other day. But first I had to stop at the police station.
My family is a family of cops. My mom and dad met at police station when they first got jobs their. My sister and brother both work in the criminal justice field.
And then there's me Heather Summers. The one who is a financial manager. I sometimes wonder if I am a disappointment. But than again I am the baby of the family. My sister and I where suppose to be going to dinner. With her boyfriend who by coincidence is a cop too. Which makes me feel even more left out.
As I entered the center I looked around and saw a man. He was standing hunched over at his car with a burning cigarette in his mouth. Well that's ironic. I mean who smokes outside of police station. I couldn't help but roll my eyes.
When I entered the police station I found my sisters desk she was sitting hunched over, similar to the guy smoking outside.
"Hey." I said as I tapped her shoulder. Jennifer looked up at me. She looked tired. And annoyed. This is going to be a good night.
"We have to cancel tonight. I am really busy." Her voice was strict with little emotion.
"Oh, come one Jen how many times are you going to cancel on me." Jennifer snorted at me.
"You remember Macey, from high school?" I nodded. "We found her dead downtown on king street. She was raped multiple times, beaten, and tortured. I can't go out I can't think straight Heather. I can't. I'm sorry, I just can't." I looked at her in utter shock. All I could do was nod. I didn't know Macey I had just had heard of her.
"I'm sorry."
she nodded
"You should go. I will text you another date, okay?" Once again I nodded. She stood up and I hugged her. I gave her a reassuring smile. And I left.
When I walked out I could feel the cold Arizona breeze. I just stood their. Taking it in. Life was so valuable, I thought. I could die any second. And frankly I wasn't okay with dying right now.
