I’d dead. I am no longer living, but I’m still here. I see a nurse so I run towards her.
“Hello, please help me, I’m so confused.”
“She can’t hear you,” says a voice.
I jump and turn to where the voice came from. A boy that looks my age is leaning against the wall opposite of me. He’s wearing all white, and almost looks like he’s glowing. The nurse turns and walks right through me. I shudder and I want to cry. I bring my hands to my face and I look at them. I can see through them to the floor. I’m slightly transparent, and it’s scaring the shit out of me.
“You can see me?” I ask the strange glowing boy.
“My name is Jem and I’m dead too, except I’m an angel.”
“Why am I not in heaven or hell yet? Did I do something wrong? Am I going to be stuck like this for forever?”
He jumps off the wall and walks over to me. “You ask a lot of questions, calm down. They don’t tell you everything. You see, you have to do something to get to heaven. For some it’s simply telling their brother they're sorry, or making sure that the money they hid is found. For others it’s slightly more difficult.”
“What do you mean more difficult?” I start to panic.
“In your case, you have to fix your band.”
“What is that supposed to mean?”
“That’s all I can tell you for now; but once it’s fixed you can come to heaven, and earn your angel wings. I have to go now but I’ll be in touch. Just think about what I said.”
“Wait…” and he disappears in a flash of light. “I don’t understand,” I mumble to myself.
I hear yelling and crying. Something is telling me to go check it out. I walk towards the noise when I recognize Ashton’s voice.
“HE CAN’T BE DEAD WE JUST SAW HIM AN HOUR AGO!”
I round the corner and I see them, Michael, Calum, and Ashton are all standing in front of the doctor that pronounced me dead. They all have tears pouring down their faces. Calum looks where I am, and for a second I think he can see me but he shakes his head and turns back to the doctor.
“I’m sorry for your loss,” says the doctor and he walks off.
I quickly walk up to Calum and poke his arm. My finger goes right through. Calum shivers like he’s cold and looks at his arm. I try talking to him.
“Calum can you hear me?” “I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry for everything.” “I really fucked up bro I’m sorry”
Calum shakes his head, “Do you hear that?”
“Hear what?” Michael’s voice cracks as he asks. His voice only cracks when he’s really upset.
“Nothing, I must be hearing things. Let’s get out of here, hospitals creep me out.”
I follow them as they head down the hallway to the elevator. Ashton reaches out and presses the down button. The elevator dings and the doors open. I step into the elevator with them. On the elevator ride down its mostly quiet until I hear Michael say something.
“This is your fault Calum, if you hadn’t provoked him, this would have never happened! Luke wouldn’t be dead!”
Calum looks completely shocked before he answers with “This is not my fault!”
Ashton just stands there with wide, teary eyes as Michael and Calum yell at each other in the small space. Right as it looks like Ashton might say something, the doors to the elevator open. A mom with her small daughter looks at the three of them with wide eyes and covers the little girl’s ears.
They continue to fight all the way to the car. Ashton just trails behind with sad eyes, and keeps his head down. On the drive back to our shared apartment they were still blaming each other. Ashton and I sat in the back of the car and out of the corner of my eye I see a tear go down Ashton’s cheek. I wipe it away and he touches his cheek, confused. I smile to myself a little.
We pull under the car park by our apartment building. The car jerks to a stop and Calum jerks open his door and jumps out. He slams the door and stomps to the lobby. Michael then gets out and slams his door and Ashton flinches. I see Calum in the elevator with the doors closing, obviously not waiting for Ashton and Michael.
Ashton still sits in the car even after Michael gets in the elevator and goes to our floor. He looks at the car ceiling and says,
“I’m so sorry Luke, I know I could have stopped you but I didn’t”
His body racks with a sob. I watch as he sobs into his hands.
“I’m right here buddy.”
