1985, Detroit Michigan

I've never been the type of person to open up to anyone. It's not because of how mom died, or because my life is falling apart, or because I have the weight of the world on my shoulders. It's just, life's always been hard. All my life, people have been telling me that I'm different. Well, there's one thing they don't know.
" Mikah!" I heard, snapping me out of my daze. I looked over my shoulder and see my best friend Shannon coming over to me.
" What are you doing after school?" She asked.
" I don't know," this was true, but really I just needed some time to myself. Shannon is my best friend. She's fierce, confident; but not obnoxious about it.
" I was just wondering, Did you see in the paper-
" I don't read the paper, you know why." It's always bad news. The last time I read it was around the time mom died.
" You're going to like this."
" Fine, what is it?"
" There's a Gay Pride Parade in Charlottetown."
I couldn't believe it. I've been to Charlottetown before, it always seemed like such a small town, a quiet town. How could they pull off something like this?
" Mikah? You there?"
I quickly realized I hadn't been.
" Huh? Oh, sorry."
" You'll go, right?" She asked
" I don't know," I said. " We'll see."
