I heard the front door slam shut and Lottie call out, “Ronnie! I’m home!”
“Sounds like Aunt Lottie’s home, Violet.” I said, pointing out the obvious.
“Can I help her with groceries, Mommy?” Violet asked, putting down the dinosaur toy she had been playing with.
“Yes, I’m sure she’d love that.” I answered. Violet grinned and quiet literally jumped up from the ground before running into the kitchen to help her aunt.
I got up from the floor and started to put away Violet’s toys scattered all around her room. When I opened up her treasure chest to dump the dinosaurs in I groaned at the sight in front of me; the bottom was completely filled with sweets, again. For some reason Violet thinks that if she hoards sweets then it make fairies come to her room.
“Ronnie!” Lottie called from the kitchen. I sighed and deposited the toys next to the chest and made my way to Lottie.
“Yeah?” I asked once I got to the kitchen.
“I got you yogurt and sushi – both are in the fridge. There are also some sweets for Violet on the counter, and don’t you dare touch my chocolate in the freezer.” She warned, picking up her dog, Rufus, and walking to her bedroom.
“Ya, ya, no worries.” I said, going to the fridge to get my Sushi. “Violet! Do you want a snack?”
Violet came running into the kitchen as soon as I said ‘snack’. “Yes, please, Mommy!”
“Alright, what do you want?” I was already rummaging through cabinets looking for food for her.
“Sweets!” She proclaimed loudly.
“Ah, ah. No sweets for you until you stop hoarding them in the chest in your room.” I stated, pulling out a snack sized bag of goldfish for her.
“But Mommy! Those are for the fairies.” Violet said as if it were obvious.
I decided I didn’t want to have this discussion today and just dropped it, handing the goldfish to Violet and popping a piece of sushi into my mouth.
Violet and I killed a few hours by playing with her toys and watching the news. I knew Lottie hated that I let Violet watch the news, says it’s too violent, but I disagree. Though my sense of what’s violent and what’s not may be skewed by the fact that I was in the Mafia, but hey, what can you do?
From the corner of my eye I saw Lottie go into the kitchen but I paid her no mind as the story on the news was quite interesting. A minute or so later I heard Lottie scream bloody murder and jumped off the couch, telling Violet to stay put and keep quiet, just in case. I ran into the kitchen to see Lottie gripping the counter and breathing heavily.
“Lottie?! What happened?!” I demanded, scanning the area for anything or anyone out of the ordinary, but I could see nothing.
“Loki. Loki was sitting on the counter!” Lottie exclaimed.
“What? Loki? As in, God of Mischief Loki?” I asked skeptically.
“No. Loki as in God of Cats. Yes Loki God of Mischief!” Lottie yelled.
“You can come out now, Violet. False alarm.” I called into the room she was at.
“False alarm?! What do you mean ‘false alarm’?! I really saw him! I swear!” Lottie insisted.
“Are you sure you’re not just tired?” I asked, picking up Violet when she came into the kitchen.
“Yes I’m sure!”
“What was wrong, Mommy?” Violet asked innocently.
“Nothing, Sweety. Aunt Lottie just had a crazy moment.” I said, laughing at Lottie’s expression. Violet looked at me quizzically.
“Remember that bad man on the telly a few years ago? The one that The Avengers beat?” Understanding flashed across Violet’s face and she nodded. "Aunt Lottie thought she saw him."
“Don’t be silly, Aunt Lottie. The good guys beat him. You were probably just imagining it.” Violet said, making me laugh.
“See? Violet knows what’s up. Don’t even worry about it, Lottie. I’m sure it was nothing, you probably just need sleep. Let Violet and I cook dinner, then you can eat and go to sleep.” I reassured her.
“Maybe you’re right…” Lottie said, seeming a bit calmer.
“Of course I’m right! I always am. Right, Violet?”
“Yup!” Violet agreed, grinning at me.
Violet and I had dinner done in a little over an hour and we ate in front of the telly, watching an episode of Doctor Who. Once the show was over, I washed up the dishes and got Violet ready for bed.
“I swear, he was there, sitting on our counter!” Lottie said. She had brought it back up again while I was washing dishes.
“Aunt Lottie? Can Rufus sleep with sleep with me tonight?” Violet asked, petting Rufus who was beside her bed.
“Of course, Sweety.” Lottie consented, leaning down to kiss Violet on the forehead.
“Goodnight, Violet.” I said leaning down to kiss her cheek. “Love you.”
“Night, night, Mommy! I love you too!” Violet said, kissing me back on the cheek.
“Lottie, you’re obviously delusional.” I argued, walking out of Violet’s room, Lottie behind me. She turned off the lights and shut the door. “Get some sleep, Lottie, and tell me if you still think you saw Loki, the God of Mischief, sitting on our kitchen counter in the morning.”
I walked into my bedroom, Lottie still following me, and filled my 9mm pistol with ammo then set it on the table beside my bed. “You’re fully stocked on arrows, right?”
“’Course. I never have to use them.” Lottie shrugged, leaning against my doorframe. I her keep a bow and arrow ready at all times, just in case someone breaks in. “Goodnight.” She said, rolling her eyes and walking to her bedroom.
I was almost asleep when I heard Lottie scream, “RONNIE!”
I jumped out of bed, grabbed my pistol, and ran to her room as fast as I could. I threw her door open to see Loki with his hand covering her mouth. “Shit.” I cursed, pointing my gun at him, though I figured it would have no effect as he’s a God. Maybe he didn’t know that, though?
Loki just laughed and shouted, “Your puny human artillery won’t work. I am a God! Open the gate!”
A bright light surrounded them both and I shot at where Loki had been but it was much too late, as they were both gone.
“Mommy?! What happened?” Violet came into the room looking very distressed.
“Lottie’s gone, Sweety. Mommy was wrong. Very wrong.” I said, picking Violet up and running into my bedroom. I grabbed the keys to my 1967 Impala and my purse and ran out the door, calling Rufus after me, taking the stairs instead of the elevator since the elevator ran slow. I swiftly made my way out the building and to the Impala, strapping Violet into her booster seat as quick as I could and jamming the keys into the ignition, driving as fast as possible to the nearest airport.
“Where are we going?” Violet asked from the back seat.
“We’re going to see an old friend of mine, Sweety. His name is Nick. He’s only got one eye. I think you’ll like him.”
